schedule: monday-friday 7am - 4pm with rotation on call.
job title: controls technician 1
general statement of duties: the qualified individual will be responsible for new installations, programming, and upgrades of equipment used in the manufacturing of tubing and other related processes. This position requires assisting maintenance technicians with troubleshooting and providing on-call coverage on a rotating basis when necessary.
key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- adhering to nec and nfpa 70 standards for electrical installations and workplace safety.
- interpreting and editing electrical schematics in accordance with iec and jic standards.
- troubleshooting and installing motor control systems, including 24vdc and 120vac control voltages, 480vac to 600vdc operational voltages, and variable frequency drives.
- working knowledge of connected components workbench software.
- programming and troubleshooting plcs using the rockwell software suite, including rslogix 500 and studio 5000.
- designing and modifying hmis using factorytalk view me or studio view designer.
supervision received: reports directly to controls supervisor.
supervision exercised: none.
typical physical demands: requires full range of body motion to include: frequent lifting, bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping, squatting, reaching and working overhead. Such activities are often performed for extended periods of time and in tight, awkward positions (such as underneath, reaching over or on top of machinery and equipment) or at heights up to forty feet to perform maintenance on tube processing equipment, machinery and overhead cranes.
- position requires frequent walking and/or standing on concrete floor during a ten-hour shift while wearing steel-toed shoes. Control technician may walk up to two (2) miles per ten-hour shift while performing essential duties.
- position requires the ability to walk on slippery, unstable surfaces while maintaining one's balance.
- requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- requires frequent unassisted lifting of a variety of objects from various positions, which range in weight from 5 to 50 pounds with an average weight of 34-37 pounds.
- while proper lifting standards are required and emphasized, there is great strain on a control technician's back. For example, control technician's carry either a tool pouch or tool backpack from equipment to equipment to perform essential functions of their job. The average weight of a tool pouch is 18-22 lbs. And the average weight of a tool backpack is 25-30 lbs.
Tool pouches are either worn slung over their shoulder or around their waist. - control technician's utilize a variety of hand positions such as turning, twisting, and pounding. Some tools used by the control technician vibrate, cut, and grind.
- the job is fast paced and the ability to deal with stress is essential.
to ensure safety, employees are required to wear personal protective equipment (ppe), which includes noise/hearing protection, safety glasses with side shields, and leather steel-toed work shoes or boots.
employees work ten-hour shifts and experience regular exposure to hot temperatures ranging from 95°f to 110°f during the summer. This heat is due to both the outside temperature and the heat generated by processes within the facility. Additionally, employees may also be exposed to cold temperatures, which vary according to the actual outside temperature.
examples of essential duties: a typical day consists of the following tasks.
- required to read and perform programming changes to include wiring, ladder logic, structured text, function blocks, operator interface and computer networking.
- often required to work on a computer for long hours while developing or modifying programs on the equipment.
- required to work with multiple programing software including rs logix 500, rs logix 5000, studio designer 5000, studio view designer 5000, factory talk view me, connected components workbench.
- required knowledge in windows operating systems to configure and setup networks, communication ports, and data file management systems.
- works closely with engineering on the development or modifications to the equipment involving electrical and control system.
- required to read electrical schematics to troubleshoot, repair, or modify equipment wiring.
- required to set up and operate various types of production machinery and equipment after they have performed a modification prior to approving production usage to ensure superior operating and safe conditions after performing changes to equipment.
