Pay Ranges

Lifeguard I: $17.50 - $21.00
Lifeguard II: $19.25 - $23.10

Responsibilities
  • Lifeguards supervise and ensure patron safety at all times, clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing facility regulations.
  • Administer first aid and provide emergency care as required, maintaining a safe aquatic environment and facility.
  • Greet the public and respond to patrons  questions and inquiries.
  • Assist with the Swim Lesson program.
  • Keep records and reports.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Assist senior staff and supervisors as directed.
  • Follow City and Parks and Community Services Department policies and procedures.
  • Assist with cleaning and routine maintenance of the aquatic facility, including locker rooms, guard office, pool surfaces, and other facility-related duties as assigned.
  • Present and maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate uniform or attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
  • Assist and teach swim lessons.
  • Facilitate recreation activities according to prepared curriculum.
  • Provide feedback regarding program goals, objectives, and activity schedules to the public, participants or supervisors.
  • Provide leadership for staff and volunteers and supervision for participants in program areas.
  • Lifeguard the water slide.

Lifeguard II, in addition to the above:

  • Assess and test swim lesson participants.
  • Assist the Lead Pool Manager with the Junior Lifeguard and Start Guard Aquatic camps.
  • Dispatch participants using the water slide.
  • Act as a Lead Lifeguard during Recreation Swim.
  • Conduct daily shift trainings.
  • Act as a Team Leader during All Staff trainings.
  • Inspect equipment, water slide, and play structure.
  • Conduct internal audits.
  • Ensure swim lesson report cards are completed correctly and on time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Basic safety precautions and procedures related to recreation programs and facilities. Philosophy, objectives and requirements in the implementation of municipal aquatics programs. Latest safety standards and information related to aquatics. Professional work habits including reliability, dependability, creativity, and enthusiasm for the job. Techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages and backgrounds, and representing the City in public interactions.

Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.

Ability to: Conduct oneself professionally. Function effectively under supervision and develop effective working relationships with City employees and the public. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Follow directions and handle multiple tasks. Swim, tread water, perform rescues involving exertion up to 100 pounds, and retrieve heavy items from 14' depth. Sit and stand for long periods. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with pool chemicals.

Read materials and computer screens; use English effectively in person, by phone, and in writing. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within guidelines. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Lifeguard I: must be a minimum of 15 years old and undergo appropriate background clearance and TB test documentation within the last two years. Lifeguard II: must be a minimum of 16 years old with at least 400 hours of experience as a certified lifeguard or 200 hours with instructor level certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and

Certifications:

Current American Red Cross certifications or equivalent in Lifeguard Training;
First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.
