Job OverviewUnder the supervision of the Fire Marshal, the examiner performs plan review, inspections, and other duties as required. The position also involves public education, public relations, exterior hazard abatement, engine company pre‑fire planning, record keeping, and report writing.
Key Responsibilities- Review plans to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes.
- Attend meetings with local government agencies such as planning and building departments, architects, contractors, developers, and the general public.
- Utilize the District’s citation process when appropriate and pursue voluntary compliance methods when possible.
- Conduct in‑house training and update field inspection staff on changes in codes.
- Formulate standardized field inspection guidelines and record‑keeping systems for construction projects.
- Provide supervision, work direction, and technical assistance as directed.
- Participate in the code change process at the state and international levels.
- Utilize tools and technology identified by the District.
- Support emergency operations as requested and appropriate.
- Perform inspections of both new and existing buildings; witness tests for sophisticated fire protection equipment; verify proper operation and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and records.
- Confer with architects, engineers, developers, etc. on projects.
- Attend training courses and professional organization meetings.
- Conduct surveys of fire hazards, process complaints, and participate in public education and public relations programs.
Experience:
At least three years of experience in an organized fire prevention/fire and life safety bureau. Experience must include fire inspection, plan review, and public education/relations.
Education / Certification:An Associate of Arts/Science Degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
Successful completion of California State Fire Training:
Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, and Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, 1C, and CA Statues and Regulations.
Must have or obtain within one year of employment, certification as an International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner. Employees are required to maintain certification as a condition of employment.
Must obtain within three years of employment, California State Fire Marshal certification for Plans Examiner.

LicensePossession of a valid California driver’s license and ongoing maintenance as a condition of employment.
