There are currently two (2) full-time vacancies in the County Facilities Division.

Position

The Custodian, reporting to the Custodial Supervisor, performs essential custodial and light maintenance tasks across various county facilities. Responsibilities include cleaning duties such as waste removal from offices, cleaning and disinfection of restrooms with replenishment of supplies, and maintenance of partitions, walls, and trash containers. Floor care includes sweeping, scrubbing, removal of gum and graffiti, and dusting. The Custodian sets up tables and chairs, manages furniture moves, and removes old fixtures.

Security checks of buildings are a core function. The role requires monitoring, cleaning, and light repair of custodial equipment such as floor buffers, vacuums, and extractors. This position requires shift work, including nights and weekends, adherence to a County-issued uniform policy, and potential work within locked or secured facilities. Basic computer skills are essential for completing County forms and utilizing relevant systems.

As our Highly Qualified Candidate
, you are proficient in custodial services and experienced in practices, procedures, and tools associated with custodial maintenance tasks. Experience with high and low speed floor buffers, extractors, and vacuums is highly desirable. You are able to exercise sound, independent judgment, are detail-oriented, and flexible with scheduled routes. You can work independently with little supervision, have personal and professional integrity, and possess initiative.

You also have excellent oral communication and organizational skills.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in cleaning and caring for floors, walls, fixtures and furniture.
  • Equipment, materials and supplies used in building maintenance.
  • Equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.
  • First aid and applicable safety precautions.

Ability to:

  • Read and understand signs, labels, work schedules and written instructions.
  • Write and enter information on time cards and security records.
  • Operate floor care machines and other custodial equipment such as floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuum, mops, broom, and dusting equipment.
  • Work independently and complete daily activities according to the work schedule.
  • Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors both orally and in writing.
  • Use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions with persons contacted during the performance of duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Minimum Requirements

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed. Typically, equivalent to one (1) year of recent full-time custodial experience in commercial buildings and/or facilities that demonstrates possession of the following knowledge and ability requirements.

Certificates and Licenses

Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver’s license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County including review of a recent DMV history. A driver’s license is required for travel between various County and related business locations.
Candidates will be required, at the time of selection interview, to furnish a recent DMV driving record.

Special Requirements

Candidates will need to successfully pass a background investigation conducted by the Marin County Sheriff's Department, to include fingerprint and criminal history evaluation.
