This position is for a part-time, hourly teaching artist for youth ages TK-5th grade. The Teaching Artist teaches their artform to students within Youth in Arts’ service area (Marin, Sonoma and West Contra Costa counties). Youth in Arts core values and pedagogical framework include programs that prioritize the creative process, SEL core competencies, culturally responsive approaches, wellness, and equity. Teaching Artists bring their unique artistic lens and voices to the work within that framework.
The Teaching Artist creates an engaging curriculum, drawing on the California Visual and Performing Arts standards . Teaching Artists plan sequential residencies for 8 - 15 weeks that introduce students to their artform (with an emphasis on cultural relevance and social emotional learning). The role will also include professional development opportunities in curriculum development, social emotional literacy, and classroom engagement.
Teaching Artists will need to draw on their expertise to:Plan and Deliver Effective Classroom Instruction:
- Implement teaching strategies and learning activities that meet the needs of all students.
- Plan scaffolded process-based lessons that build over several weeks with clear objectives.
- Use multimodal instruction (written, verbal and kinesthetic).
- Make learning objectives clear to students.
- Provide ample opportunities for students to engage in creativity, confidence and compassion through arts learning.
- Use Universal Design for Learning , especially during class discussions.
- Incorporate technology and media in lesson planning when appropriate.
- Create an environment that is conducive to student engagement and joy.
- Maintain YIA and school site standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety.
- Establish residency routines and procedures.
- Maintain communication with classroom teachers throughout the residency.
- Be culturally responsive, encouraging every student to engage and learn.
- Be intentional with the language used with students. Use sensitive and respectful language as it relates to race, ethnicity, ability, socioeconomic conditions, and gender identity.
Implement lessons that engage students and reflect their backgrounds and interests.
Encourage students’ use of home language, background knowledge and interests.
We are looking for candidates who have:
- Teaching experience, specifically in TK-5th grade.
- A willingness to create scaffolded lesson plans and curriculum using Youth in Arts’ framework.
- Cross-cultural skills in youth development, self-efficacy, social justice, and cultural awareness.
- Familiarity with the California State Visual & Performing Arts Standards.
- An understanding of how the arts connect to academic subjects
- The ability to arrive on time at partner sites.
- An ability to use video conferencing and video/audio recording technology.
- Bilingual and multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, transport supplies by YIA supplied cart and lift up to 30 lbs.
Youth in Arts (YIA) is an education nonprofit founded in 1970 by local arts advocates responding to diminishing arts resources available for California students in the Bay Area. Since then we have served more than 1 million students in Marin, Sonoma and West Contra Costa counties.
Youth in Arts builds visual and performing arts skills through innovative and in-depth programs that foster confidence, creativity, compassion and resilience in students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Youth in Arts offers in-school programming opportunities in visual and performing arts to public, private, and charter schools. They are:
- Artists in Schools provides residency programs in schools provided by professional Teaching Artists with diverse offerings in visual arts, dance/movement, theater, architecture and new media.
- Arts Unite Us provides accessible arts learning to students with disabilities. We offer fully-funded visual and performing arts residencies to self-contained special education classrooms.
