Overview
San Mateo County Health has an exciting new opportunity for a Deputy Director of Nursing Inpatient Services at San Mateo Medical Center. The Deputy Director of Nursing Inpatient Services will assess, plan, evaluate, and monitor all aspects of nursing care delivery in the Medical Surgical Inpatient Service, partner with other divisions and departments to support a collaborative interdisciplinary team, and work with the medical staff, executive management, and community stakeholders to develop policies and procedures to maintain quality of care and safety for patients and staff.
This position may be appointed as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for the San Mateo Medical Center by the Chief Executive Officer.
The Deputy Director of Nursing Inpatient Services receives general direction from the Chief Nursing Officer and will supervise assigned managerial, clinical, professional, technical and clerical staff. Responsibilities include designing, delivering and executing medical surgical nursing care with a vision aligned to population needs, establishing annual goals, coordinating with the clinical manager on capital and operating budgets, and partnering with HR to recruit and retain staff.
The role collaborates with physicians, clinical managers, and other health team members to promote high-quality patient care and supports the professional practice of nursing.
Ideal candidate qualifications
- Clinical experience and expertise in Medical Surgical Nursing and critical care areas.
- Interest in advancing nursing in the Inpatient Services with integration of evidence-based practices.
- Commitment to enhancing through Nursing Practice a Recovery Milieu.
- Interest in building relationships and coordinating services across divisions to support a collaborative interdisciplinary team within the community and within San Mateo County Health.
- Nurse Executive Certification or plan to be certified within one year.

- Lead concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care and drive improvements in quality of care.
- Create systems that advance accountability for problem solving and input into decision making at all levels.
- Provide an environment with clinical leadership opportunities for staff to participate in peer review and learning.
- Evaluate safety practices and, with the safety manager, establish policies and standard work to ensure safety.
- Collaborate with staff and health system partners to develop and implement service goals and standards of practice aligned with national standards and evidence-based practices.
- Support and coordinate efforts with Aging and Adult Services, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, and Correctional Health Services across care transitions.
- Serve as administrative liaison among interdisciplinary teams, executive management, advisory boards, regulatory bodies and nursing staff to ensure integrated services.
- Plan, budget, manage and evaluate staffing patterns to ensure staff work to the full extent of their job descriptions and licenses.
- Coordinate quality improvement efforts to meet publicly reported metrics (core measures, nurse-sensitive indicators, etc.).
