Manager, Finance (Legal)

San Mateo, CA (Hybrid) or West Coast (Remote)

Business Planning & Operations (BP&O) is seeking a Finance Manager to support the Legal corporate function. You will work with Legal leadership and Finance to help plan, forecast, and analyze spend across outside counsel, compliance initiatives, IP protection, and department operations. You will be responsible for preparing and analyzing financial plans, monitoring spend against budgets, and providing actionable insights to support strategic decision-making.

The Finance Manager will ensure alignment with corporate policies, support monthly and annual financial cycles, and deliver clear, executive-ready reporting for leadership reviews. This role reports to the Director of BP&O – Corp Functions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead monthly close activities for Legal Finance, including accruals, reclasses, and variance analysis; present performance summaries and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of driver-based forecast and budget models for outside counsel, eDiscovery, compliance programs, and IP enforcement.
  • Manage tracking of commitments and actuals; partner with Legal Operations and Procurement to optimize POs/SOWs, rate cards, and spend controls.
  • Continuously improve reporting to highlight trends, risks, and opportunities; drive automation of recurring reports when appropriate.
  • Lead legal scenario planning and sensitivity analyses to quantify the financial impact of regulatory changes, risk mitigation, and portfolio decisions.
  • Prepare executive-ready materials for monthly reviews, budget reviews (7F/10F/1F), and ad hoc leadership requests.
  • Manage and develop junior finance team member, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field; advanced credentials (MBA, CPA, CFA) are a plus.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or legal operations finance, with at least 2 years in a managerial or lead capacity.
  • Proficiency with Excel (advanced formulas, modeling); knowledge of Workday Adaptive EPM a plus
  • Deep understanding of legal operations finance, including outside counsel management and compliance is a plus.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to influence and partner with non-finance stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location. We note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

In addition, this role is eligible for SIE’s top-tier benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, matching 401(k), paid time off, wellness program and employee discounts for Sony products. This role also may be eligible for a bonus package. The base pay range is flexible based on geographic location (e.g., Seattle). For example, the estimated base pay range is $138,300 — $207,500 USD.
