Part-Time Cosmetology Electives Instructor (Pool) – San Mateo County Community College District

Schedule:
Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range from $89.20 to $130.94 per hour for lab courses (Salary Schedule HB) and $103.85 to $151.07 per hour for lecture courses (Salary Schedule AJ).

- Teach classes as assigned from the Cosmetology Department curriculum in one or more of the following areas:
- Fundamental and advanced skills involved with becoming an entry-level make-up artist, including high-fashion make-up skills, special-event make-up, corrective make-up, and editorial make-up
- Technique and maintenance for wigs and extensions
- Instruction designed for students who have completed or are currently enrolled in the Cosmetology program:
- Advance natural hair care skills and discuss career opportunities in natural hair care. Topics include: history of natural hairstyling, disinfection and sanitation, hair types, basic anatomy, and natural hair and braid sculpting techniques
- Instruction designed for current and former students of the Esthetics Program and estheticians licensed by the State of California:
- Focuses on the advancement of esthetic procedures. Topics include: chemical and mechanical peels, electrical modalities, body waxing, and speed waxing. Also, an introduction to medical esthetics and an exploration of career opportunities in this field.
- Instruction designed for students enrolled in or graduates of a cosmetology or esthetician program and/or licensed cosmetologists and estheticians:
- Introductory skills for creating semi-permanent eyelash enhancements. Will include types of eyelash extensions, eyelash perms, eyelash tinting, and techniques for application, client services, and career exploration
- Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
- Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
- Perform other duties required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs. The College offers day and evening classes
- Up-to-date knowledge in all phases of salon work and advanced teaching techniques related to cosmetology
- Use of technology in teaching
- Theoretical and practical applications of subject matter and ability to organize and teach in ways appropriate to students’ abilities
- Experience teaching or preparation to teach college-level courses in basic and advanced hair styling, chemical reformation, hair coloring, salon management, competition hairstyling, cosmetician science, manicure science, and fashion concepts
- Successful industry work experience related to the teaching assignment
- Experience in teaching or preparation to teach college-level courses in cosmetology
- Understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
- Use and develop teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration, engaging students actively in learning and encouraging them to become independent, creative learners with higher-order thinking skills
- Organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with different abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences
- Develop instructional learning outcomes and methods for assessing students’ achievement of these outcomes
- Acceptance of the division’s commitment to established academic standards
- Any bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of related professional experience, OR any associate degree and six years of related professional experience, OR equivalence (see below). Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master’s degree.
- Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.
