Overview

The San Marino Police Department is looking for an effective communicator and a motivated individual to join our team of professionals in handling emergency and non-emergency calls for the city of San Marino. The ideal candidate will have strong multi-tasking skills and the ability to remain calm during stressful situations. The successful candidate will provide excellent customer service to both external and internal customers.

Police Dispatchers currently work a 3/12 schedule that includes nights, weekends and holidays.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the Police Dispatcher/Clerk performs general duties related to the operation of a communications center that receives incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency police and fire assistance; dispatches required equipment and personnel; receives and transmits teletypes for related computer systems; operates a variety of communications equipment including radio, telephone, and computer systems; completes and maintains a variety of police records.

Duties

  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service, determine nature and location of call; determine priority of calls, and dispatch units accordingly; keep track of police unit locations and status.
  • Obtain and record all necessary information to transmit to the appropriate safety personnel; use radio equipment or other means of communication to dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment.
  • Receives and transfers, if necessary, 911 system emergency calls for service.
  • Receives and transfers text to 911 calls for service.
  • Monitors building video surveillance cameras.
  • Maintains communication with field units, watch commanders, staff and support personnel; monitors voice radio and teletype system communication involving surrounding agencies.
  • Transmit messages over radio using law enforcement radio codes.
  • Record messages or relay requests to appropriate persons/agencies.
  • Maintain a variety of police records including, but not limited to, radio logs, daily activity bulletins and case logs of sequentially numbered crime and incident reports occurring during a given time period.
  • Transmit and receive teletype information.
  • Enters, maintains, retrieves and interprets data in police department computer systems (e.g. Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System).
  • Transmits and inquires via CLETS, DOJ, National Crime Information Center, and FBI databases.
  • Data entry of citations.
  • Receive payment for police services.
  • Performs fingerprinting for the general public.
  • Creates invoices for house watch requests.
  • Prepares monthly transmittal of cash and credit card receipts.
  • Distributes documents to employees and /or agencies.
  • Assist members of the public at the Police Department reception desk.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND DEMANDS

Knowledge of:
The organization, functions, and responsibilities of the Police Department;
Operations, services, and activities of a public safety telecommunications and dispatch center;
Operational characteristics of public safety communications equipment including computer aided dispatch systems and multi-channel radio systems;
Law enforcement and emergency service procedures for responding to and handling reported incidents;
Techniques of questioning for both emergency and non-emergency calls;
Methods and techniques of receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for service;
Radio codes currently used by the Police Department;
Functions of the Police Department and other City departments;
Geographic features and locations within the area served;
Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations;
Methods and techniques of telephone etiquette and conflict resolution;
Principles and procedures of police recordkeeping, security and dissemination;
Police Department forms and procedures, particularly those used for crime reports;
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic mathematics;
Familiarity with standard office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software.

Skills and Demands
:
Communicate clearly and distinctly using proper English pronunciation and grammar.

  • Learn and retain the geographic deployment of the police patrol units; analyze and interpret maps.
