Working Hours:

Incumbent must be available to work up to 35 hours per week, and may be required to work in the evenings, on weekends and holidays as needed.

A city of 3.75 square miles, San Marino is home to the renowned Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. With a focus on resident services and community, the City of San Marino is recognized for its police and fire services, library, parks and community amenities, and planning and zoning that distinguish and maintain the community’s high-quality residential character.

The City of San Marino is hiring four part-time seasonal Recreation Specialists to work in our Community Services Department. The Community Services Department is responsible for enriching the community through creative recreational programs, services and events, as well as the promotion of reading and learning activities through the Crowell Public Library.

General Description

Under general supervision, the Recreation Program Leader conducts a wide variety of diverse recreation programs services and special events. Responsibilities include teaching, leading, and engaging participants, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Current assignments include, but are not limited to early childhood education, youth programming, senior programming, special events, facilities, and park operations. Schedule may vary depending on the needs of the Recreation Division and the City. Incumbents may be required to work in the evenings, on weekends, and during some holidays.

This position is "At-Will," which means the Recreation Program Leader serves at the will of the City Manager and may be removed at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal. Duties

  • Provides customer service and information about division programs, services, activities, and events to the public.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment for special events, classes, and programs.
  • Assists groups using parks and facilities as requested; explains and enforces park and facility use policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Provides staff support at special events and programs.
  • Removes trash in and around parks and buildings; performs light cleaning and custodial duties of facility rooms, picnic areas, tables, floors, and playground equipment; reports facility maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
  • Conducts indoor/outdoor games, sports, arts and crafts, and other activities related to recreational programming; ensures the safety of program participants.
  • Observes and complies with City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Establishes and maintains a team approach with co-workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of

  • Recreation, leisure, and community programs, services, and activities.
  • Care and proper use of recreational facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Basic safety precautions and procedures related to park and recreation program area(s) and facilities.
  • Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools, and equipment.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Skills and Demands
