STRATEGIC FUNCTION

Disability Coordinator is primarily responsible for the administration, supervision and coordination of all areas of Disability Services. Additionally, ensures that all related Head Start Performance Standards and Agency policies and procedures are properly implemented and maintained.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for ensuring that at least ten percent of enrollment opportunities are available to children with disabilities.
  • Plans the Disabilities component programs with a team of staff, parent and other component specialists and supervises the implementation of the planned activities.
  • General Classroom/Visit Observations & Coaching.
  • Visit each location (center) at least once per month.
  • Provide child development information related to disability or special needs.
  • Provide guidance and model developmentally appropriate activities for children and effective ways to work with and support young children.
  • Provide written and oral observations and strengths‑based feedback to staff on an annual basis.
  • Meet with teams to review observations and develop and implement plans as needed.
  • Ensure that the program services to children with disabilities and their families are well coordinated with community partners, particularly the local education agencies (LEA’s) and Part C agencies responsible for implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Develops a list of local disabilities resources, establishing and maintaining relationships with those partners and contractual agreements as appropriate.
  • Organizes and coordinates a system that ensures the need for early intervention, special education and related services are identified promptly and in coordination with partner agencies.
  • Coordinates with team, including staff and parents in developing an Individual Learning Plan using the child’s goals from disability documentation for each child with a disability.
  • Consults on and provides resources for lesson plans, schedules, and daily activities which reflect and integrate the special needs of children.
  • Ensures that parents of children with disabilities are supported and involved as decision makers and receive assistance in understanding and advocating for services and support needed to address their child’s special needs.
  • Ensures that children receive appropriate and timely screening to identify and address any behavior, social or emotional concerns.
  • Implements practices that ensure parents are involved in planning and participating in recommendations for the mental health needs of their children and offers individual and group opportunity for counseling, education and training.
