Job Description

The Licensed Veterinary Technician is responsible for a variety of tasks related to customer service and patient care within the veterinary practice. Tasks include animal handling, pre- and post-operative patient care, anesthesia monitoring, x-rays and proper prophy technique.

Education And Experience
  • Required:

    2 years previous veterinary office experience
  • Preferred:
    Active state technician license
  • Preferred:
    High School graduate or equivalent
Knowledge And Skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Must be able to learn and operate various veterinary software applications
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective in multi-tasking (prioritizing and accomplishing tasks)

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Functions that an individual can perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation include:

  • Prepare and maintain exam, treatment, and surgical rooms
  • Greet clients and patients
  • Obtain patient history and updates from clients
  • The ability to perform and/or assist with diagnostic procedures
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient medical records
  • The ability to calculate medication dosages
  • Review patient instructions with clients and distribute educational materials
  • Obtain blood samples (cephalic/saphenous/jugular)
  • Process and submit lab work both in house and to outside labs
  • Clean, wrap, and sterilize surgical instruments and supplies
  • Properly run an autoclave
  • Place IV catheters and assist with surgical equipment monitoring (anesthesia, ventilator, fluid pump, etc.)
  • Restrain patient for examination with the veterinarian
  • Take notes on examination results and update records
  • Assist in inventory control of medical supplies
  • Administer medications prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Monitor and track vitals during and after surgery
  • Anesthesia: induction, maintenance, monitoring and recovery
  • Dentistry: ultrasonic scaling, hand scaling, polishing, and knowledge of the oral cavity, charting
  • Radiology: full mouth intraoral radiographs, ability to use digital DR and CR systems
  • Calmly, comfortably handle animals before, during and after procedures
  • Take pets for a walk during their visit and before they go home
  • Maintain a sanitary and attractive clinic environment; clean as needed
  • Clean and sterilize animal enclosures to prevent the spread of disease
  • Clean, brush, and remove bandages from each patient before they go home
  • Maintain veterinary equipment in a sterile condition to prevent postoperative infections
Physical Demands
  • Lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds several times per day
  • Work in a stationary position at a computer for long periods
  • Stand, walk, stoop, bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and climb for long periods
  • Physically restrain animals of various sizes on the floor and table
  • Grasp, hold, and manipulate objects; near/far/color/depth vision as needed
  • Potential exposure to anesthetic gases with proper protective measures and to zoonotic diseases
Reporting Relationship
  • Reports to:

    Practice Manager or Medical Director and/or DVM
  • Management reserves the right to assign or reassign duties at any time
Compensation

Compensation negotiable based on credentials and experience, with an hourly pay range from $27-$36 per hour. The actual rate offered will consider your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
