Overview
Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) at California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM) serves to support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success and retention, and works toward the maintenance of an inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic and career goals. SHCS is accredited by AAAHC and its Psychology Internship is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
SHCS is seeking interested mental health providers for a non-tenure track Student Services Professional, Academic-Related I (SSP-AR I) clinical counselor position. This position will be full-time and may be renewable as a 10-month appointment pending budget, campus need and satisfactory evaluations. This position is responsible for providing short-term individual, couple, group therapy, triage, outreach, consultation, and crisis counseling. Counselors are expected to spend about 60-65% of their time providing direct service to eligible CSUSM students per Executive Order 1053.
Counselors are also expected to participate in a multidisciplinary treatment team, providing referrals when appropriate, and consultation to faculty, staff and the community.
In the California State University system, Student Services Professionals, Academic-Related (SSP-AR) are in the California Faculty Association (bargaining unit

- Provide short-term individual, couple, group therapy, triage, outreach, consultation, and crisis counseling.
- Spend about 60-65% of time providing direct service to eligible CSUSM students.
- Participate in a multidisciplinary treatment team; provide referrals when appropriate; offer consultation to faculty, staff and the community.
- One of the following three criteria:
- Licensed as a Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Professional Clinical Counselor or
- Possession of a Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-Accredited doctoral program or
- Possession of a terminal master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical/Counseling Psychology, or Social Work (or a related behavioral science field), current registration with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, Associate Professional Clinical Counselor, or Associate of Social Work, and completion of licensure hours.
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience in working with clients from different cultural, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated generalist clinical skills including short-term/time-limited, evidence-based individual and group modalities, and crisis intervention.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a stressful environment.
- Ability to independently organize, manage, and prioritize tasks, including clinical caseload.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
