A Mechanical Apprentice, known at Drummac as Qualified Person (QP), must be able to work in compliance while maintaining and repairing passenger rail cars and locomotives under the supervision of our Passenger Rail Mechanic. They must adhere to and maintain strict compliance with corporate and office policies, established health and safety protocols, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

• Perform air brake inspection of passenger cars, private cars, and possess knowledge of air brake systems.
• Perform locomotive daily inspection; troubleshoot and handle repair/replacement of parts.
• Troubleshoot passenger cars including toilet systems, air conditioning systems, doors, panels, lights, electrical systems, and brake systems, and make necessary repairs.
• Document regulatory, client, and company-required paperwork.
• Perform electrical tests, remove, disassemble, replace, repair, modify, rebuild, assemble, adjust, and maintain batteries and all electrical equipment or components on locomotives.
• Communicate written and/or verbal findings of inspections to supervisor.
• Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and be on call as required.
• Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate dynamic train schedules.
• Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
• Wear and use required protective equipment while working.
• Take responsibility for own safety while on the job.
• Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent reading, writing and reasoning skills.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Trade school or formal railroad locomotive or diesel mechanical maintenance training.
• Knowledge of locomotive mechanical or locomotive electrical or industrial heavy equipment mechanical experience.
• Successful completion of a pre‑employment screening process.

For Passenger Rail Mechanic Apprentice candidates in San Luis Obispo, California: $25–$27 per hour. Actual hourly rate offered will be determined based on relevant skills and experience.
