Under the general supervision of the SLO HUB Supervisor and/or the Clinical Program Manager & Homeless Services Director, the Peer Support Specialist assists the SLO HUB Case Manager in supporting chronically homeless adults with co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders. This role provides peer mentorship and support to help participants identify client‑centered pathways out of homelessness, engage in treatment, and work toward stable housing and self‑sufficiency.

Through encouragement, guidance, and lived‑experience support, the Peer Support Specialist promotes recovery, stability, and alignment with CAPSLO’s mission.

What you bring to the table:

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Experience in navigating the day-to-day life of accessing homeless services, mental health services, physical health services, and drug and alcohol services.
  • Lived experience of homelessness, and addiction and is currently in a stable housing setting.
  • Fluent in two or more languages, including one that supports the needs of the program and community is preferred, but not required.
  • Must have dependable, insured transportation, a valid California Driver's License (mileage to be reimbursed), and an acceptable driving record. A DMV printout and proof of insurance will be required.

As a Peer Support Specialist you will:

  • In collaboration with the SLO HUB team, assist the case manager with integrated treatment plan goals and tasks associated with meeting the goal. (For example, helping participants get vital documents, apply for assistance programs, or fill out important forms).
  • Ensure the team and participants are following site-specific policies and protocols.
  • Assist with the intake of new participants and administer the participant sign-in and data collection process.
  • With the support of the SLO Hub Case Manager and supervisor, the peer support persons act as a participant resource by providing referrals to any available community resources.
  • Coordinate and oversee participants assigned care plan duties are being completed.
  • Utilize prevention measures, conflict resolution skills, and crisis management techniques with participants to help maintain an assault free environment at the shelter.
  • Be responsible for completing any necessary documentation in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions to ensure you are up to date on all policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Provide emotional support, guidance, and advocacy for the participants who are facing challenges in their recovery.
  • Facilitate support groups, individual coaching, and offering empathetic listening, sharing personal experiences, and assisting with coping mechanisms.
