Position: Fiber Splicing Technician
The Fiber Splicing Technician is responsible for prepping and fusing single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables for inside and outside plant construction, performing fiber panel and splice case audits, and placing mid-sheath splices. This position plays a vital role in ensuring quality and timely deliveries of our fiber services to customers.
A Day in the Life of the Fiber Splicing Technician- Perform prep and fusion of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables for both inside and outside plant construction.
- Perform fiber panel audits and splice case audits.
- Properly place mid-sheath splices.
- Test and troubleshoot fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope.
- Perform installation and testing of fiber cross connects.
- Work with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design to perform splicing as directed.
- Provide Fiber Design team with detailed reports of field splicing activity.
- Perform all work to conform to quality control guidelines, including requirements outlined in applicable regulations (OSHA, FCC, NESC, NEC) and procedures in the Installation, Technical, Operations, Safety Manuals, and Employee Handbook.
- Clean, maintain, stock and secure equipment.
- Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic with high productivity and minimal supervision.
- Participate in engineering, permit and construction processes.
- Construct proper splice cases (pressurized and non-pressurized) using all types and sizes of cable, including grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
- Make precise recommendations for changes in running fiber optic cables and provide input into construction methodologies.
- Assist in scheduling splicing jobs with Construction Managers and/or Fiber Design.
- Assist in training and support for Fiber Splicer I-II.
- Coordinate with Construction Manager to prepare required resources with the NOC for maintenance splicing.
- Work with Fiber Design on required parts and equipment.
- Work flexible hours as needed and on-call rotation which may include nights and weekends.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must possess a valid driver s license and maintain a clean driving record.
- 5+ years of splicing experience with the ability to properly place a mid-sheath splice.
- Proficient with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to adhere to local and federal regulations and company policies.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and organize effectively.
- Basic computer skills and understanding of Outlook, Excel, Word and Google Suite (Docs, Drive and Mail) and Smartsheets.
- Ability to perform prep and fusion of Ribbon fiber and single mode.
- Intermediate understanding of proper safety construction practices.
- Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends, as well as on-call rotation.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with team members.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment without supervision.
- Ability to drive company vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
- Valid driver s license and auto insurance with a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to live within 30 miles, or a maximum 1-hour commute from the assigned territory. Territories are defined by management and can be altered at any time.
- Ability to carry, climb and operate an extension ladder (approx. 28 ft high and 75 pounds).
- Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.
- Vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to stand 50-70% of the time.
- Ability to perform job from high places (towers and roofs).
- Ability to be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, insects and cleaning solutions.
