Dispatcher II/III at County of San Luis Obispo is a lateral opportunity within the Sheriff’s Office. The position monitors, receives, and dispatches routine and emergency radio communications to Sheriff’s patrol units and other public safety agencies. Responsibilities include securing and recording information, identifying locations, operating a CLETS (California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) terminal to obtain or verify information, maintaining logs of calls and incidents, preparing reports, and providing information and assistance to the public.
The Sheriff’s Dispatch Center serves San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas, including Morro Bay and Arroyo Grande.
- Monitor, receive, and dispatch routine and emergency radio communications to Sheriff’s patrol units and other public safety agencies.
- Secure and record information about the nature of a reported problem and identify the exact location.
- Operate a CLETS (California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) terminal to obtain or verify information and maintain required logs of calls and incidents.
- Prepare reports, provide information and assistance to the public, and determine availability and location of patrol units to dispatch.
- Provide coverage for San Luis Obispo County and surrounding areas (including Morro Bay and Arroyo Grande).
The Sheriff’s Office is recruiting experienced Lateral Dispatchers at the Dispatcher II/III level to fill vacancies.
This is a continuous recruitment and will remain open until filled. The recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time.
Qualifications- Education and Experience:
A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities. Examples include:- Sheriff’s Dispatcher I:
High school graduation or General Education Development (GED) certificate. - Sheriff’s Dispatcher II:
In addition to the above, one year of relevant work experience, including the use of radio, telephonic, or automatic communication equipment. - Sheriff’s Dispatcher III:
In addition to the above, one year of experience as a Dispatcher II or equivalent.

- Licenses and Certificates:
Sheriff’s Dispatcher II must possess POST Public Safety Dispatcher certification at time of appointment. Sheriff’s Dispatcher III must obtain a POST Communication Training Officer certification within twelve months from date of appointment.
- The employment record of the individual has been entirely satisfactory;
- The individual has not been separated, nor is he or she being considered for separation, due to fault or delinquency on his or her part.
