Position: Assistant Professor of Geospatial Engineering (AY 26/27)

Overview

Geospatial Engineering for Resilient and Adaptive Infrastructures Tenure-Track Faculty Position – Cal Poly invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track Assistant Professor starting Fall 2026 in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, College of Engineering, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo.

Cal Poly has a tradition of excellence in teaching and scholarship with a Learn by Doing philosophy. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in teaching and curriculum development in Geospatial Engineering for resilient and adaptive civil engineering infrastructures and will engage in high-quality scholarly work evidenced by external peer review. Faculty are encouraged to perform service at all levels of the University.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate lecture courses and laboratories in civil engineering and geospatial engineering.
  • Contribute to curriculum development in geospatial engineering for resilient and adaptive infrastructures.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate-level research.
  • Develop and maintain externally-funded research.
  • Engage in activities related to service at the department, college and university levels.
Salary and start date

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Anticipated hiring range: $106,000 - $117,000 per year. Qualified candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply. Anticipated start:
Fall 2026.

Qualifications
  • Required:

    An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Geospatial Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent. ABD will be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate was awarded prior to or by the start of the appointment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty; ability to develop externally funded, applied research with undergraduate and graduate students; ability to work in multidisciplinary settings; excellent written and verbal English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and research; field- or laboratory-based instruction; experience with high-impact educational practices; professional licensure or relevant certifications (e.g., Professional Land Surveyor) and/or industry experience in geospatial engineering.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment.
Special Conditions
  • Mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act; comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
  • Background check is required after a conditional offer; may be required for current employees transferring to campus positions.
  • Cal Poly cannot guarantee visa sponsorship; applicants should not expect sponsorship.
  • Possible transition to semester-based year-round operations (YRO) with teaching in two consecutive semesters or three semesters as policy allows.
