Full-time Lecturer - City and Regional Planning

Base pay range: $79,000.00/yr - $86,112.00/yr

The City and Regional Planning Department in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full-time lecturer for the 2026-27 academic year. The position is eligible for re-appointment for one additional year, subject to satisfactory performance and departmental needs.

Overview

The department seeks a full-time lecturer with a record of teaching (either demonstrated or with potential for success) in one or more of the following areas: community planning, urban design, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The position will involve teaching in laboratory (studio) and lecture-format courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, with a focus on learn-by-doing and project-based learning. Studios may involve collaboration with real community clients such as cities, counties, or community-based organizations.

Proficiency in GIS is a competitive advantage.

Responsibilities
  • Lead community planning studios or urban design studios.
  • Teach laboratory (studio) and lecture-format courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Apply learn-by-doing and project-based learning as the primary teaching model.
  • Work with real community clients as part of studio work, as applicable.
Qualifications Required
  • A master's degree in planning, landscape architecture, urban design, architecture, or a closely related field is required.
  • Five years of professional and/or teaching experience in the field of planning.
  • Demonstrated competence in urban design or community planning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators from diverse backgrounds.
  • Individuals with exceptional professional and/or academic distinction may be considered without the cited credentials.
Preferred
  • Ph.D. or a Professional Doctorate in planning or a related field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated research/practice interests; willingness to embrace Learn by Doing within the polytechnic tradition.
  • Supervision of project work in professional and/or teaching settings.
Special Conditions

The person holding this position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. A background check (including criminal records) is required after a conditional offer of employment. Cal Poly cannot deny an applicant a position solely due to criminal conviction history until an individualized assessment is completed.

Current employees offered on-campus positions may be required to undergo a background check where required by law or designated as sensitive. Cal Poly is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus. CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy applies, which prohibits hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California.

About The Department

The Department of City and Regional Planning offers two professionally oriented programs (BSCRP and MCRP) and has strong links to the California planning profession. There is a joint Master’s degree in Transportation Planning with the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, and interdisciplinary courses with other college departments.
