Overview
The Biomedical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California (Cal Poly) invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2026.
Cal Poly emphasizes a Learn by Doing philosophy, a teacher-scholar model, and hands-on learning. The successful candidate will teach foundational biomedical engineering courses in classroom and laboratory settings, promote a hands-on learning environment, engage in research and/or scholarly activity, foster student innovation and creativity, and mentor students in applied research. The selected candidate will integrate teaching and applied research in a multidisciplinary environment at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will lead and mentor students in applied biomedical engineering research.
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Anticipated hiring range: $106,000 – $117,000 per year. Qualified candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply.

QualificationsRequired: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Bioengineering / Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent. Candidates nearing completion (ABD) may be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate was awarded prior to or by the start of the appointment. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required.
Demonstrated proficiency in English is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and research, experience with laboratory-based instruction and/or industry experience, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and collaborative setting. Active engagement in scholarship and professional development is desirable. Knowledge of industry practices, modern design and analysis tools, and willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering curriculum are preferred.
Experience with a broad range of student populations and fostering a collaborative environment is preferred.
