Job Summary

The Kinesiology and Public Health Department in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking to fill one full-time, academic year, tenure track position in biomechanics, with appointment beginning August 17, 2026. The appointment is anticipated at the assistant professor rank, with higher ranks considered. Salary ranges are commensurate with qualifications.

  • Assistant Professor rank: $97,788 – $107,628
  • Associate Professor rank: $112,500 – $118,524

In an initiative to expand its teaching and research program on biomechanics within its Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree program, the Department invites applications from qualified individuals with a commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. The selected person will teach upper‑division core curriculum courses in the Kinesiology Program, including Biomechanics, Motor Control, and Motor Learning and Development. Preferred research areas include:

  • Musculoskeletal and Neuromechanical Biomechanics
  • Computational and Modeling Biomechanics
  • Sports, Performance, and Skill Acquisition
  • Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Rehabilitation Biomechanics
  • Cellular and Tissue Biomechanics, Human Factors and Ergonomics
  • Pathology and Motor Disorders, Developmental and Aging Issues

Cal Poly embraces a teacher‑scholar model; the selected candidate will innovate lecture and laboratory teaching approaches, participate in scholarly practices such as peer‑reviewed research, professional consulting, conference presentations, and grant development, and contribute to curricular improvement and service activities such as committee service, student advising, and industry relationships.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field.
  • Record of research and scholarly activities in biomechanics.
  • Evidence of promoting the well‑being and advancement of students, colleagues, and the department.
  • Commitment to equitable, student‑centered learning and teaching.
  • Proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
  • Evidence of high‑quality teaching and research with students.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with undergraduate students in an inclusive environment.
  • Excellent teaching experience at the university level, including face‑to‑face, hybrid, and online delivery.
  • Track record of external funding support for research and scholarly activities.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate student research.
Special Conditions

About the Department

The Department of Kinesiology and Public Health is a major academic unit within the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics, offering a BS in Kinesiology and a BS in Public Health. With approximately 650 undergraduate students, 15 full‑time faculty, and 4 full‑time lecturers, the department promotes physical activity and health through teaching, research, and service.

Faculty engage in scholarship across kinesiology and public health, including chronic disease prevention, wearable sensors, physical behavior epidemiology, sport physiology, health literacy, sport psychology, exercise metabolism, cycling biomechanics, and more. The Center for Health Research and several NIH‑funded grants support extensive research involving community participants and national partners.
