The Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, is seeking a two-year, academic year, Full Time Lecturer in Environmental Planning starting August 17, 2026. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Primary Teaching Responsibilities
  • Environmental Impact Analysis and Management
  • Applied Resource Analysis and Assessment
  • Natural Resource Protection and Policy
  • Additional courses across the curriculum may be assigned based on student demand and the applicant's qualifications and interests.
Initial Rank and Salary
  • Lecturer A: $5,507 - $6,677 per month
  • Lecturer B: $6,221 - $13,224 per month
  • Lecturer C: $6,825 - $14,523 per month
  • Lecturer D: $8,593 - $15,211 per month

Required Qualifications
  • An earned Bachelor's degree in environmental planning or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of progressive professional experience in the environmental planning field.
  • Ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and supportive learning environments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in environmental planning or a closely related field.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty across the College and University.
  • Teaching experience and ability to teach broadly across the curriculum.
  • Relevant work experience that brings professional capabilities and the ability to build connections with industry and foster new industry relationships.

About the Department

The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. The programs enroll approximately 750 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students and are supported by 20 tenured or tenure‑track faculty. The department has on‑campus and off‑campus field and lab resources, including Cal Poly's 3,000‑acre Swanton Pacific Ranch.

It also supports interdisciplinary collaboration across campus, including participation in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire institute and the Center for Organic Production and Research.
