The Mathematics Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, invites candidates for a full‑time, academic‑year, tenure‑track position in pure mathematics, beginning August 17, 2026. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; higher ranks will be considered. Salary ranges are commensurate with qualifications and experience of the selected individual.
- Assistant Professor rank – $97,788 – $107,628
- Associate Professor rank – $112,500 – $118,524
Excellence in teaching, an active program in research and scholarship, and departmental service are expected. Successful candidates must be committed to quality undergraduate and graduate education, supervise undergraduate research projects, and master’s theses. Applicants should be comfortable teaching a variety of mathematics courses, including upper‑division and graduate level. Candidates whose areas broaden the research activities of the department are encouraged to apply.
Special areas of interest include logic, number theory, combinatorics, commutative algebra, geometric group theory, field theory, algebraic, differential, fractal, complex geometry, topology, complex analysis and operator theory, and geometric analysis.
- Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated commitment to student‑centered learning and experience teaching mathematics at the university level.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
- Evidence of high‑quality teaching and research with students.
- Evidence of scholarly productivity.
- Evidence of promoting the well‑being and advancement of students, colleagues, and the department.
- Ability to work with a diverse population fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
- Ability to teach a variety of mathematics courses, including upper‑division and graduate level.
- Expertise in pure mathematics in an area compatible with or broadening the research activities of the department. Special areas of interest include logic, number theory, combinatorics, commutative algebra, geometric group theory, field theory, algebraic, differential, fractal, complex geometry, topology, complex analysis and operator theory, and geometric analysis.
- Experience supervising student research and master’s theses.
The position holder is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083. A background check, including a criminal record check, must be completed satisfactorily before employment. Failure to complete the background check may result in withdrawal of the offer of employment.
About the DepartmentThe Cal Poly Mathematics Department has approximately 33 tenure‑track faculty, 24 full‑time and part‑time lecturers, 2 Frost postdocs, 11 graduate teaching associates, 2 administrative staff, and 275 math majors.
