The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2026.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Anticipated hiring range: $106,000 - $117,000 per year. Qualified candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate lecture courses and laboratories in civil engineering and geospatial engineering.
  • Contribute to curricular development in their area of expertise.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate-level research.
  • Develop and maintain externally-funded research.
  • Engage in service at the department, college, and university levels.
Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Geospatial Engineering, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent (ABD considered, must show degree awarded by start date).
  • Excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to work with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program involving undergraduates and graduates and partnerships with stakeholders.
  • Hands-on, student-centered teaching experience; ability to work in multidisciplinary settings; strong written and oral English proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and research (time-since-degree sensitive).
  • Experience with field- and/or laboratory-based instruction and high-impact educational practices.
  • Professional licensure or relevant certifications (e.g., Professional Land Surveyor) and/or industry experience in geospatial engineering.
  • Experience with diverse populations and promoting a collaborative, inclusive environment.

  • Background check (criminal records check) required after conditional offer; ability to start pending satisfactory clearance.

  • Potential transition to semester-based year-round operations (YRO) with two-semester regular appointment; additional teaching in a third semester may occur for extra compensation, depending on needs and policy.
