The Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor to begin August 17, 2026. The position focuses on audio‑visual media and digital and interactive storytelling. The candidate will design and teach advanced courses, mentor students, develop curriculum, and conduct research or professional development that advances the department’s media innovation mission.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, and teach courses in audio‑visual media, digital storytelling, and emerging journalism platforms.
- Mentor a large and diverse student population and provide inclusive advising and support.
- Lead curricular innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration across the College of Liberal Arts.
- Engage in scholarly, creative, or professional activities that contribute to the department’s research agenda.
- Participate in departmental service, including committee work and program development.
- Master’s degree in journalism, media studies, communication, or a related field, conferred by time of appointment.
- Advanced multimedia storytelling skills in audio‑visual journalism.
- Commitment to experiential learning, equity, and preparation of students for evolving professional contexts.
- Proven ability to teach and mentor students effectively in higher education or professional training environments.
- Demonstrated university teaching experience in journalism or a related field.
- Proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
- Terminal degree in journalism, media studies, communication, or a related field.
- Three years of professional experience in audio or video journalism.
- Experience applying artificial intelligence technologies in journalistic contexts and guiding students in ethical, effective AI‑assisted reporting and production.
- Proficiency in photojournalism and design.
- University teaching experience with demonstrated ability to teach innovative storytelling for digital platforms.
- Experience developing curricula and interdisciplinary projects.
- Established industry connections that can benefit student networking and career placement.
- Published research or professional contributions in journalism or a related field.
- Demonstrated commitment to student‑centered learning and teaching.
- Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
The anticipated hiring range is $90,276 to $98,244 per year ($7,523 to $8,187 per month). Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
