Overview
Trekkers is a car-camping program designed to provide youth (ages 11-15) with a safe outdoor experience while teaching outdoor camping skills and wilderness preservation. It is a 5-day, 4-night program with outdoor recreation, nature education, teambuilding activities, hiking and swimming. Trips occur in various natural locations across the central and northern part of California, including state and national parks. All camping occurs in established campgrounds.
Staffingand Schedule
This program operates with a ratio of two staff members for up to twelve campers.
Qualifications and RequirementsApplicants must be at least 19 years of age by June 1, 2026 to apply
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants must be at least 19 years of age by June 1, 2026 and have education equivalent to completion of high school
- Possess a valid California Driver’s License
- Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR before the start of programs (Wilderness First Aid certification preferred)
- Extensive outdoor experience which includes experience as an outdoor trip leader or a camp counselor (or equivalent)
- Knowledge of nature study and outdoor recreation skills, environmental education, and camping/trail etiquette
- Knowledge of best practices in youth development, including behavior management and positive role modeling
- Ability to demonstrate strong skills in leadership and team building
- Ability to provide strong internal and external customer service
- Ability to communicate effectively with parents, children, camp staff, and other City employees
- High proficiency in the ability to be flexible, practice good judgement, problem-solve, and mitigate risk
- Ability to have fun and enjoy the great outdoors with children!
Physical/Sensory Requirements:
Staff should be prepared to work outdoors, in various environmental conditions each week. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.;
verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens and slip hazards when near water. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Must be able to complete additional trainings, including but not limited to:
Concussion Training, Blood Borne Pathogens, Mandated Reporter, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heat Illness, Covid Safety, Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.

Hours:
Sundays – prep days: 4 hours
Mondays – trip start: 16 hours
Tuesdays & Wednesdays – full days in field: 24 hours
Thursdays - Friday (trip ends): 16 hours
Total hours (day rate): 77
Total hours (overnight rate): 34

Wages: $18.73/hr day rate and $16.97/hr overnight rate (up to 8 hours per day)
Status/Selection Process: Seasonal, temporary part-time, no benefits, no overtime. Applicants will be screened according to experience relevant to this position.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties: Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and Camp Manager, the Outdoor Camping Guide positions assist in the implementation of daily operations for Trekkers Camp.
