Description

Abode, one of the largest and effective nonprofits working to end homelessness in the Bay Area, is seeking an Associate Director to oversee our programs in Alameda County.

Position Summary

The Associate Director will oversee program managers and other key staff that operate housing sites and provide leadership to the overall PSH teams. They will represent Abode Services at a countywide level and be responsible for high‑level collaboration and thought partnership with external partners.

How You Make An Impact
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with property management, owners, county, city, law enforcement, and other key partners.
  • Supervise managers, clinical supervisors, community liaison, and other key staff. Support them in assessing areas of improvement, system changes/needs. Provide feedback, coaching training, and disciplinary action as needed.
  • Participate in countywide meetings; provide feedback on successes and necessary course corrections—at the site and system level.
  • Lead, in consultation with supervisor and program management staff, the development of new programs and lease‑ups.
  • Ensure that all aspects of each site meet internal and external standards (clinical, resident services, harm reduction, community engagement, etc.).
  • Engage in ongoing tracking and evaluation of program goals and effectiveness.
  • Provide support to staff when dealing with client crises. Problem‑solve with managers on challenging participant and partner situations.
  • Oversee and approve the allocation of various housing support funding.
  • Work with PSH staff to ensure real‑time accurate data entry is occurring.
  • Facilitate case conferencing and administrative meetings.
  • Develop materials, assessment tools, job descriptions, and other program processes/documents/tools.
  • Develop policy and procedures, service delivery, and other aspects of the program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
How You Meet Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, or related field.
  • 4 years of experience providing program coordination and staff supervision.
  • Experience with HUD CoC and Medi-Cal funding sources.
  • Experience with program development, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings.
  • Use of personal vehicle, proof of a valid and current California driver’s license and current insurance along with a clean DMV record required.

  • Excellent verbal & written communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with teams.
  • Ability to build supportive and respectful working relationships with participants, sensitivity to, and understanding of the special needs of the homeless.
  • Understanding and practice of culturally sensitive components of direct service delivery through open dialogs and self‑exploration with diverse groups.
  • Experience in building strong collaborative relationships with other nonprofit, city, and county partners.
  • Knowledge and ability of the following evidence‑based models:
    Harm Reduction, Housing First, and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Ability to effectively intervene in crises using de‑escalation techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, systems, and platforms.
  • Ability to learn and use required mobile devices and business‑related applications.
  • Outstanding communication skills and high degree of emotional intelligence, cultural humility, with a proven track record to build and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts.
