Position: Perm - Technologist - Laboratory (Evenings) San Leandro, CA

Point of Care Lab Technician

Pay Range: $24.18 – $29.89 per hour
Shift Type: Evenings
Shift Times: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM
Hours/Day: 8
Shift Notes: Monday–Friday 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM | available

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Point of Care Lab Technician performs waived laboratory tests in a remote or mobile setting. This role also includes monitoring the quality of reagents and ensuring proper working conditions of instruments.

Essential Functions
  • Receive specimens from phlebotomists and couriers.
  • Operate a delivery van to bring the mobile lab to areas of high STAT testing volume when applicable.
  • Enter patient demographics and test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Check quality control of each test prior to running and reporting patient results; ensure QC is within appropriate limits and escalate issues to supervisor/manager in real time.
  • Perform lab testing in point-of-care areas, including Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Molecular, and Coagulation.
  • Perform data entry of test results.
  • Confirm abnormal results prior to release and report any “rare and improbable” results to supervisor/manager.
  • Perform blood collection, including venipuncture and capillary specimens.
  • Process specimens and log requisitions as needed.
  • Monitor STAT board to ensure turnaround time goals are consistently met.
  • Assist in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and ensure compliance with state documentation requirements for lot numbers, quality control, and specimen records.
  • Troubleshoot client, instrument, or computer issues as needed.
  • Perform maintenance on automated instrumentation.
  • Record quality control and maintain QC records for all assays performed.
  • Perform other tasks and procedures commensurate with education, training, and abilities.
  • Responsible for clerical functions associated with specimen integrity, testing, identification, and reporting.
  • Follow all safety protocols as outlined in the safety manual.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Employees frequently stand, handle or feel, talk, and hear.
  • Occasionally walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • May lift or move up to 15 pounds occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; no color vision deficiency.
  • Laboratory staff work in areas with potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens, biological materials, hazardous substances, and radioactive material; appropriate training provided.
Physical Demands
  • May push/pull 50–100 lbs using ramps or pulleys; force may occur 16–24 times per day during equipment handling.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record and ability to drive safely.
  • Familiarity with laboratory processes and workflow.
  • Previous experience with phlebotomy and laboratory testing preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any certification/licensure required per state regulations.
  • California only: qualify as testing personnel for waived testing; minimum of licensed medical laboratory technician or licensed vocational nurse.
