Overview
Under direct supervision, to perform heavy physical labor and a variety of semi-skilled, unskilled and manual tasks in the maintenance of roads and expressways, associated landscaped areas and related structures; and to operate a variety of light trucks and equipment.
NOTE: Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take the performance examination tentatively scheduled for the week of March 16, 2026.
Responsibilities- Rakes and shovels asphalt in patching and overlaying roads.
- Cleans and maintains culverts, runoffs, banks, shoulders and roadsides.
- Sets up and removes traffic warning cones and barricades.
- Serves as flagger on road maintenance projects.
- Cuts, chops or removes weeds along roadways.
- Assists in cutting down trees.
- Prunes trees, shrubs and ground cover.
- Waters and irrigates landscaped areas.
- Assists in constructing and repairing guard rails, bridges, retaining walls, culverts and drains.
- Assists in erecting and repairing fences and road signs.
- May operate pickups and two-axle trucks (such as dump trucks, water trucks and herbicide trucks).
- May operate compressors and power tools.
- Sprays herbicides.
- Makes and maintains reports of time and materials.
- May be assigned to cooperative crews within the Road Maintenance Division during emergency conditions within the County.
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required.
- Performs related work as required.
Sufficient education, training, and experience, to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge, skills and abilities.
Training and ExperienceNote: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and one (1) year experience working as a laborer or tradesperson in any field requiring a high level of physical labor and endurance.
Special Requirements- Possession of a valid California Driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
- Possession of a California Class B Commercial Driver's license with no restrictions is desirable.
- Methods, materials, safety practices and tools used in road construction and maintenance.
- Operation and preventative maintenance of trucks.
- Understand oral and written instructions.
- Perform a variety of manual tasks which requires an ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb, twist, push/pull, lift, drag and carry materials and objects.
- Demonstrate strength, agility and endurance.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Use a variety of hand and/or power tools.
- Work in various traffic, weather and surface conditions.
