The City is recruiting for part-time, unbenefited Assistant Swimming Pool Manager and Swimming Pool Manager positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics program.
Position details- Assistant Swimming Pool Manager: part-time, unbenefited, less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year; starts at $30.48 hourly with an approximate 5% ongoing non-pensionable compensation.

Hours may require mornings, evenings, and weekend work during June 15–August 8 at assigned pool locations. If selected, hours and dates are mandatory as part of the work schedule. All programs follow Santa Clara County Public Health guidelines. Face coverings and PPE are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization following CDC guidelines.
Note:
Candidates are not required to possess Lifeguard Training or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificates at the time of application or interview. If selected, Lifeguard Training and WSI certification classes may be offered. The ARC Lifeguard Training and WSI age requirement is at least 15 years old.
The Assistant Swimming Pool Manager participates with the Swimming Pool Manager in the management and supervision of a City-operated swimming pool facility and may supervise other pool personnel in the absence of the Pool Manager. This role may perform lifeguard activities and instruct in all categories of swimming classes.
- Responsibilities include:
assisting the Pool Manager in planning, organizing, and directing recreational swimming and swim instruction programs; supervising lifeguards and pool personnel; participating in in-service training; performing lifeguard duties as needed; assisting with pool facility management, including fee collection, attendance reports, accident reports, and financial reporting; assisting with janitorial duties and limited pool maintenance; preparing work schedules.
The Swimming Pool Manager plans, organizes, directs, and supervises swimming and swim instruction programs at a City-operated pool facility.
- Responsibilities include:
enforcing pool policies/procedures and managing staff; collecting attendance fees and maintaining required reports; supervising health and safety factors including first aid; programming and scheduling events; supervising lifeguards and pool personnel; maintaining personnel records and reports; assisting with janitorial duties and limited pool maintenance; supervising in-service training and pre-season meetings; attending meetings and trainings as required.
Assistant Swimming Pool Managers and Swimming Pool Managers may be placed at any City pool. Currently, the City of San José operates four pools:
Camden Community Center, Fair Swim Center, Mayfair Community Center, and Rotary Ryland Pool.
