Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Overview
Under general supervision, to inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair and overhaul, gasoline, diesel or alternative fuel powered heavy duty trucks, construction equipment, and automobiles.

Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take an in-person practical examination tentatively scheduled for Saturday November 22, 2025. Qualifying candidates will be notified of the examination instructions.
- Inspects gasoline or diesel powered heavy equipment and trucks, automobiles, motorcycles and ATVs to determine corrective work needed; troubleshoots and diagnoses computer control system components using scanners or laptop computers
- Overhauls, maintains and repairs equipment such as automobiles, trucks, trailers, bulldozers, rollers, graders, road sweepers, travel-loaders, auxiliary engines, pumps, steam cleaners, air compressors, motorcycles, ATVs and related equipment
- Times engines and makes a variety of adjustments
- Removes, disassembles, repairs and replaces a variety of parts including transmissions, clutches, differentials, axles and suspension, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems, hydraulic systems, ignition and electrical systems, electronic and computer control systems, steering and control systems, air conditioning/climate control systems, tracks and assemblies, various electrical devices/units, motor vehicle body parts and attached equipment
- Uses test equipment, including electronic scanners or laptop computers, shop tools and equipment including micrometers, grinders, schematics, valve facers, hoists and other devices common to the trade
- Makes repairs to heavy equipment and vehicles at the site of a breakdown
- Operates equipment and vehicles to insure complete repair
- Conducts smog tests and smoke tests on diesel engines under public sector regulations
- Conducts annual safety inspections required under California State laws on equipment
- Performs acetylene, tig, mig, stick or arc welding; performs plasma cutting in repairs to vehicles and fabrication of equipment attached to vehicles
- Grinds, seats and adjusts valves
- Repairs and rebuilds truck frames and fabricates or modifies special equipment and simple structures used on heavy equipment, trucks and light vehicles
- Repairs and installs special equipment such as sirens, gun racks, extra lights, cages, controllers and instrument panels
- Prepares and maintains related records
- May prepare schedules of repairs for a limited amount of equipment
- May order replacement parts and make recommendations as to cost of repairs
- Identifies correct replacement parts from manufacturers' catalogs
- May operate a metal lathe
- May lead one or more Automotive Attendant, Fleet Services Assistant Mechanic or other lower level staff
- Performs related work as required
Sufficient education, training and work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge and abilities:

Note:
The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are normally acquired by training and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
AND
Two (2) years recent experience as a journey level heavy equipment mechanic.
OR
Three (3) years recent experience equivalent to Santa Clara County's Fleet Services Assistant Mechanic.
Possession of a valid California driver's license is required at the time of appointment and ability to qualify for and maintain an acceptable driving record, which will qualify a County Driver's Permit.
Special RequirementsSpecial Requirements: Possession of a forklift operators certification within six (6) months of appointment or must vacate the position. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Special Requirements for Fleet Management personnel only: Possession of Air Conditioning and Refrigerant license/certification issued by the State of California within six (6) months of appointment or must vacate the position. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Some positions may require the possession of a valid Class A or B California driver's license.
