The Harker School is searching for on-call food service positions, including cooks, kitchen aides, and dishwashers, to join our school. These are on-call positions working Monday - Friday, 6 hours daily. Catering and additional work, are available.
Position SummaryAs members of the Harker staff, Food Service employees are expected to support the school’s goals, objectives, policies, and procedures and always conduct themselves professionally.
Essential functions and basic duties- Prep, cook, and set up / serve meals
- Maintain and replenish food in the serving area
- Place food and supply orders daily
- Maintain and prepare food for catering requests
- Maintain, clean, and sanitize the kitchen
- Prepare for the next day’s menu and meals
- Assist where needed in other areas, including Dish room, Catering, etc.
- Other duties as needed and assigned by the Kitchen Manager, or Food Service Director
Required Knowledge and Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of proper food handling procedures
- Understanding of food preparation terms and techniques
- The ability to react to change productively and complete tasks as assigned in a timely manner
- The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Proficient knife skills
- Knowledge of and ability to operate kitchen tools and machinery safely and effectively
- Ability to make decisions on the use of excess food items using the F.I.F.O. Method
- Ability to work cooperatively in a kitchen environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to understand and follow instructions, guidance, supervision, and requests for assistance
Other
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of experience cooking and working in the food service industry
- Experience in large-scale food preparation preferred
- Ability to work a varied schedule of hours and days, including some weekends, as needed to fulfill the needs of the food service department
- Ability to adapt to changes in schedule or kitchen/campus location, which may be required in order to fulfill the needs of the food service department
- Must meet all the health and safety regulations, including uniform and hair restraints
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
- Ability to stand and walk during a 6-hour shift
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, twist, and wipe
- Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment up to 40 pounds and place items on high and low shelves
- Must work in a noisy and crowded environment
- Must work in and around fumes and odors
- Exposure to varying temperatures
- Exposure to chemicals used in washing dishes, utensils, and surrounding areas of the kitchen
- Frequently immerses hands in water
- Must wear proper slip-resistant shoes at all times
- Must wear required uniform at all times
