Overview
The City of San José is one of the nation's best-managed cities and one of the top ten cities in which to live, work, and do business. The City’s Public Works Department (PWD) delivers capital improvement projects for City facilities and infrastructure, maintains City facilities and fleet assets, facilitates development activities, and provides animal care and services. San Jose Animal Care Services, a division in the Public Works Department, is seeking to fill multiple Animal Care Attendant I/II (Part-Time, Unbenefited) vacancies for day, night, and swing shifts.
AnimalCare Attendant I
This entry-level class performs duties related to feeding, cleaning, care, and housing impounded animals. It is expected to function with less knowledge or independence than Animal Care Attendant II and may exercise less independent discretion. This class differs from Animal Care Attendant II in that Attendant II provides lead direction, staff training, and higher-level animal care.
Animal Care Attendant IIThis journey-level class performs the full range of duties after learning established procedures. Incumbents work independently, exercise judgment and initiative, and require only occasional instruction for new or unusual situations. This class is distinguished from Animal Care Attendant I by a higher level of animal care and potential lead direction over Attendant I.
Work Environment andPhysical Requirements
Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 pounds while handling animals and equipment. Work may occur outside and involve exposure to inclement weather, blood borne pathogens, animal scratches and bites, moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, chemicals, pollens, and other airborne irritants.
ScheduleFor night shift, training (4–6 weeks) occurs during normal business day hours. After training, work is scheduled five days a week in an overnight shift (within 9pm–8am). The position requires weekend, holiday, rotating shifts, and response to emergency animal services assignments.
Salary- Animal Care Attendant I (part-time, unbenefited):
City Pay Floor rate of $30.47 hourly plus an approximate five percent ongoing non-pensionable pay. - Animal Care Attendant II (part-time, unbenefited): $31.77 – $35.07 hourly plus an approximate five percent ongoing non-pensionable pay.
The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Education, Experience, and LicensingAnimal Care Attendant I
Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (GED or California Proficiency Certificate).
Experience: None
Required Licensing: Obtain euthanasia certification within one year of hire.
Animal Care Attendant II
Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (GED or California Proficiency Certificate).
Experience: One year (2,080 hours) of experience handling and caring for animals at a level comparable to Animal Care Attendant I with the City of San José.
Acceptable Substitution: None
Required Licensing:
- Valid euthanasia certification
- Valid Veterinary Controlled Substance Permit
- Successful completion of Kitten Care Training Program
