Job Title: Seasonal Wildlife Care Technician
- San Jose

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Non-Union/ Full-Time/ Temporary (6 months)

Salary: $22.66/hr

Who we are: The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) is a local, private, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to animal welfare. It is our mission to build healthy relationships between people and animals. PHS/SPCA is truly an open admission shelter, not only accepting many pet animals who might be refused at other shelters, but also taking care of injured and orphaned native wildlife.

We’re among just a handful of humane societies and SPCAs, worldwide, that extends its caring services to sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Who you are: You have a passion for rehabilitating a variety of wildlife animals, ensuring that all wildlife in our care is provided the best possible care and attention. You thrive in a fast-paced work environment, performing all the necessary functions in maintaining the Wildlife Care Center in a thoroughly clean and sanitary manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides humane care for all wild animals in care.
  • Cleans and disinfects all animal areas as necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Prepares diets, feeds, and ensures water is provided as directed for all wildlife.
  • Unloads, stores, and restocks Wildlife Care Center supplies.
  • Helps provide enrichment for wildlife patients.
  • Performs light maintenance and other janitorial duties.
  • Assists in the training of new staff and volunteers.
  • Provides assistance to other departments as assigned to ensure a positive public image, enhance the operation of the organization, and improve quality of care for animals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Works effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Disposes of deceased animals.
  • Assists with animal releases as necessary.
  • Maintains department equipment in good working order. Reports items for repair/replacement as needed to appropriate supervisory staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Assists in training and supervising department volunteers. Brings any performance issue to managers.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • The individual must also possess the ability to manage the emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances.
  • Upon hire, must pass a background check.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge WORMD database or become proficient within the probationary period (first six months from hire date). Basic knowledge, or become proficient with Microsoft Office and computer keyboarding skills, and data entry.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with clean driving record to be insured with PHS insurance.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Must have a flexible schedule and the ability to work on weekends and/or holidays as needed.
  • Must be available for 6 months.
  • This position is on-site in San Jose.
