Overview
Under general direction, to perform a variety of skilled tasks for the development, maintenance, and preservation of County Parks and Recreation facilities, amenities, and open space areas; and to provide lead direction to an assigned park location or work unit.
The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
Responsibilities- Leads, plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews the work of park personnel, temporary employees, volunteers, and contractors;
- Makes recommendations and coordinates long- and short-term park maintenance projects and goals;
- Answers procedural and work-related questions, investigates inquiries, and recommends corrective actions to resolve issues within set guidelines, and provides information to the public;
- Assigns, distributes, and adjusts workloads, completes accident and injury reports, and provides verbal and written counseling, as needed;
- Trains and orients park staff, temporary employees, and volunteers in park maintenance activities;
- Conducts performance appraisals for assigned park staff;
- Assists in developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, procedures, and standards;
- Implements and follows required standards developed by the department, Cal OSHA, and other agencies;
- Prepares and provides budget recommendations and implements and monitors the current budget spend for the assigned park location or work unit;
- May participate in the grant process and monitors grants for the assigned park location or work unit;
- Attends and conducts meetings to exchange information on department policies, procedures, and may participate in committees to develop recommendations;
- May participate on interview panels in an advisory capacity and makes recommendations on hiring selections;
- Coordinates with key stakeholders, including but not limited to the County’s Facilities and Fleet Department and contractors on facility management, as related to the assigned park location or work unit;
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of County Parks and Recreation facilities, amenities, and open space areas, including rough carpentry, plumbing, painting, basic electrical, and/or masonry;
- Recognizes standard pests, fungi, and other infestations, and selects and administers the proper application (e.g., fungicide, pesticide, herbicide, animal abatement devices, etc.) with caution in accordance with County policy and federal and state regulations;
- Performs water treatment and distribution activities and installs, repairs, and operates irrigation systems, as well as potable and non-potable water systems;
- Collects water samples for testing and monitoring;
- Constructs, maintains, and repairs roads, trails, and trail features, including but not limited to pavement cutting, ditch digging, storm water infrastructure maintenance, erosion control, laying pipes, and back filling trenches;
- Evaluates project sites, develops materials lists, calculates measurements, estimates costs, reads and interprets technical specifications and plans, and recommends and implements changes for maintenance projects;
- Provides traffic control around work sites to ensure safe conditions;
- Inspects facilities and work areas to ensure a safe work environment and submits work orders to repair identified issues, including coordinating the disposal of hazardous materials;
- Observes special requirements of native, non-native, invasive, or delicate specimens;
- Oils, greases, and performs basic maintenance work on equipment;
Orders, receives, and inventories supplies and equipment; - Performs landscape and vegetation management, including planting, watering, pruning, trimming, fertilizing, removing, spraying, transplanting, and cultivating plants, trees, and other vegetation in accordance with department standards;
- Performs litter clean-up, refuse control, and general cleaning of park structures, buildings, and amenities, including but not limited to open space areas, restrooms, picnic areas, historic sites, camping…
