Sanitation Specialist

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley invites a dedicated professional to maintain the cleanliness and safety of our warehouse and office facilities. The role requires a strong focus on janitorial best practices, food‑safety compliance, and collaborative volunteer coordination.

Purpose

The Sanitation Specialist will preserve the physical appearance and general sanitation of the warehouse and/or office facility while adhering to Second Harvest policies, Feeding America and AIB Food Safety requirements, and all Local, State and Federal Food Safety regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain interior and exterior cleanliness by sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, power‑scrubbing, washing and sanitizing; remove waste and recyclable materials as needed.
  • Clean restrooms to the highest level of cleanliness; maintain inventory of toilet paper, paper towels, soap, sanitary napkins and odor control devices.
  • Operate and maintain equipment safely; follow safe work practices outlined in safety policies and the Injury/Illness Prevention Plan.
  • Exercise proper handling, storage and use of chemical‑based cleaners.
  • Assist volunteers in sanitation and housekeeping chores as directed by the Warehouse Manager.
  • Contribute to the adequacy of janitorial supplies and equipment; recommend safe and environmentally friendly cleaning products; monitor supply levels; pre‑approve cleaning supplies before use.
  • Perform light building maintenance such as painting, changing lights, hanging signs, and other general building maintenance tasks.
  • Conduct weekly Food Safety inspections; report findings, set dates for issue resolution, and attend monthly Food Safety meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by warehouse managers and supervisors to achieve the Foodbank’s daily feeding objectives.
  • Respond to emergency or disaster situations by reporting for work, potentially relocating to other food banks as needed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a warehouse environment emphasizing housekeeping and sanitation.
  • Proven ability to work safely with chemicals and cleaners.
  • Ability to work independently and reliably with minimum supervision.
  • Follow standardized written procedures and schedules.
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers as required; informally supervise volunteers.
  • Operate cleaning equipment and basic tools safely.
  • Occasionally work inside freezers and coolers (-10°F to 38°F).
  • Exert force and/or carry items weighing 20 to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Walk, sit, squat, bend, twist and reach at various heights above and below shoulder level up to 2/3 of the time.
  • Push, pull, lift or carry large, heavy, awkward objects while maneuvering in confined spaces; ascend or descend flights of stairs, climb in/out of trucks, docks or forklifts up to 1/3 of the time.
  • Operate manual and electric walk‑behind pallet jack and sit‑down forklift; hold certification for said equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license to drive between facilities for various job assignments.

Location

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, San Jose, CA – onsite. Remote work site, if within driving distance of the location and within the state of California.

Hours

Full‑Time. Non‑Exempt. Regular schedule with occasional evenings and weekends.

Compensation

$24.23 starting wage, commensurate with skills and experience; plus a comprehensive benefits package including flexible paid time off, paid holidays, retirement plan, and health benefits.
