Overview
PACE Medical Assistant role at North East Medical Services. The PACE Medical Assistant is an unlicensed health professional who assists patients during routine visits and supports health management. The role works collaboratively with other health care team members and operates under the supervision of a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, PACE Center Manager, Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse Team Leader.
Essential Job Functions- Work closely with medical providers to deliver comprehensive health care to patients.
- Prepare for patient visits in advance to ensure labs, diagnostics, hospital/ER discharge summaries, etc. are ready and available for the visit.
- Assist in clinical services such as taking vital signs; performing EKGs, immunizations, skin tests, vision and hearing tests, blood draws; collect and prepare specimens as necessary.
- Assist with clinical data entry into the electronic health record (EHR) including patient height, weight, vital signs, BMI, etc.
- Assist providers in updating health maintenance checklists and patient records in the EMR system; confirm purpose of visit.
- Operate various medical equipment, e.g., electrocardiogram, audiometry, bilimeter, glucometer, protime reader, pulse oximeter, autoclave.
- Inject, handle, or provide vaccines and medications to patients after verification with RN or medical provider.
- Measure and describe TB skin test reactions and refer to a medical provider if reactions exceed thresholds.
- Prepare exam rooms before and after each patient in accordance with NEMS policy and OSHA guidelines; restock rooms, operatory, and sterilize instruments.
- Assist providers during physical examinations, treatments, and procedures as requested.
- Assist in discharging the patient at the completion of the office visit; complete medication, laboratory, and radiology orders; provide patient education; answer final logistical questions.
- Arrange for hospital admission or ER visits as required.
- Refer to other departments within the agency or to outside agencies as needed.
- Refer to a registered nurse or medical provider for telephone or drop-in triaging cases.
- Assist in checks of completeness of provider’s work.
- Assist patients in ambulation and transfers.
- Complete forms required for different programs (e.g., pharmacy, authorization, referral forms).
- Track and follow up on patients with continuing health care needs (e.g., health screening, breast, cervical, prostate, glucose, cholesterol).
- Rotate to other clinic sites or medical departments as required.
- Utilize Epic appropriately and efficiently; serve as content and workflow expert for resolving issues and proposing solutions in Epic.
- Perform other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.
- Required:
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Medical Assistant certificate (CMA) from an accredited school required.
- Documentation and completion of 160 hours of externship or 1 year of work experience as a Medical Assistant required.
- Current BLS and First Aid required.
- Preferred:
- At least 1 year of experience working with the frail or elderly population.
- At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Type at least 35 wpm.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and EMR (EPIC is a plus).
- Must be able to fluently speak, read and write English.
- Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese) is required.
- Fluency in other languages is an asset.
This is an FLSA non-exempt position. This is an OSHA high-risk position. This is a full-time position.
