Overview
The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) invites applications for a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Integrated Pest Management Advisor:
Commensal Rodents and Urban Wildlife, serving Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Mateo/San Francisco Counties at the Assistant rank. The Advisor will develop an innovative multi-county applied research and extension education program that supports integrated management of commensal rodents and urban wildlife in the five-county area.
Focus on research and education to effectively manage vertebrate pests in urban areas, with an emphasis on commensal rodents such as rats and mice around dwellings and structures. Work with public agencies, pest control operators, licensed professionals, and other practitioners.
Responsibilities- Conduct applied research and extension activities to develop IPM strategies for vertebrate urban pests, particularly commensal rodents.
- Share research results with clientele through consultations, workshops, field demonstrations, site visits, radio outreach, webinars, and publications (newsletters, fact sheets, policy briefs, blogs, and peer-reviewed journals).
- Develop and evaluate IPM programs; disseminate information via UC ANR series, UC IPM Pest Notes, and relevant journals.
- Coordinate with local agencies, UC IPM Program, and campus-based faculty to deliver train-the-trainer programs and hands-on workshops for urban pest management professionals.
- Lead or participate in projects demonstrating IPM practices to local audiences and collaborate with UC Master Gardeners and other stakeholders.
- Serve across Counties of Responsibility:
Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Mateo/San Francisco; travel and onsite work in all counties as required.
- Education:
Master’s degree in wildlife management, pest management, applied vertebrate ecology, or closely related field at time of appointment. - Key
Qualifications:
ability to address human-wildlife conflict in policy and communication; experience in wildlife management involving rodents; experience in applied, impact-oriented research; capacity for team-based programs; ability to document research, extension, teaching experiences and scholarly achievements; willingness and means to travel; valid California driver’s license. - Additional

interest in a career with UC Cooperative Extension; strong communication and collaboration skills; commitment to lifelong learning; willingness to disclose misconduct findings as required by policy. - Legal/Policy:
Compliance with UC Sexual Violence and Harassment Policy, UC Antidiscrimination Policy, and related policies.
- Knowledge of animal behavior, wildlife damage management, and toxicology.
- Experience building partnerships and multidisciplinary teams; planning projects; managing teams; securing extramural funding; bilingual communication is a plus.
UCCE Advisors are evaluated on extending knowledge, applied research and creative activity, professional competence and activity, and university/public service.
Location and ReportingLocation Headquarters: UC Cooperative Extension Office, Santa Clara County, 1553 Berger Drive, San Jose, CA. Reporting to the UCCE Director for Santa Clara County and the UC IPM Statewide Director; not remote; onsite work and travel across five counties.
Salary & BenefitsSalary range:
