Students served may qualify for Special Services under any of the 13 federal Special Education eligibility categories; they have varying levels of academic, adaptive, and behavioral needs. The most common areas of disability in East Side Union High School District are Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism, Other Health Impairments, Intellectual Disabilities, and Emotional Disabilities. The para educator assists a certificated teacher(s) in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students by performing a variety of instructional support activities;
performs a variety of related duties in the maintenance of an effective learning environment; and performs clerical duties as assigned. This position requires a high degree of positive contact with both students and certificated staff.
- Assist teacher(s) in instructing individuals and/or small groups in various learning situations, including basic academic, vocational, and/or specialized subject areas; tutor students as assigned.
- Assist in implementing curriculum for assigned areas of instruction; supervise students to maintain an effective learning environment and address behavioral issues as needed.
- Organize learning/Instructional environments (classroom, learning/testing center, computer/science laboratory, child care center, etc.); maintain bulletin boards; issue and retrieve equipment/materials; keep classroom/instructional areas neat and orderly.
- Prepare instructional materials; type and copy materials; assemble quizzes, tests, and worksheets; gather resource information/materials; set up equipment.
- Provide feedback on students’ progress through observation and daily contact; maintain accurate student records.
- Participate in parent/family meetings as assigned.
- Administer and score tests, daily assignments, homework, etc.
- Maintain informational and operational records and files (test/homework scores, attendance, meal counts, student work folders, lab use, and materials/supplies).
- Monitor and assist students while using equipment (computer terminals, printers, controlled readers, laboratory equipment, etc.).
- Monitor, inventory, order, and maintain instructional supplies and equipment.
- Take daily attendance and prepare attendance forms/reports.
- Prepare answer keys for worksheets and tests.
- Communicate with parents regarding absences, meetings, and appointment scheduling; escort students as needed for orientation campus tours or field trips.
- Perform clerical tasks as assigned (typing, filing, answer phone, take messages).
- Translate written/oral information, assignments, letters, and forms as needed; assist with food preparation for child care center participants as assigned.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Knowledge of proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Knowledge of general needs and behaviors of students.
- Knowledge of pertinent academic areas and learning situations.
- Ability to learn methods and procedures for assigned instructional situations; understand and carry out oral and written instructions independently.
- Ability to understand and relate to the needs of assigned students in a learning situation; learn the requirements of the students in the specific learning program(s) to which assigned.
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt effective actions; supervise students in various situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain accurate classroom/center records and files; communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written forms.
