Overview
Under the supervision of an Assistant Superintendent, the Director of Special Education provides management, coordination of services, and the implementation of programs, placement, and services for individuals with specialized needs, including 504. The Director is responsible for the supervision and monitoring of all aspects of special education in the district.
Calendar and Compensation
- $ - $ annually (Certificated Management Salary Schedule, Range 14)
- Master's and doctoral supplements of $2,967.00 annually (Up to
2) - Staff have the choice of several HMO/PPO medical plans, including plans that require no employee contribution for full family coverage

General Description
Under the supervision of an Assistant Superintendent, the Director of Special Education provides management, coordination of services, and the implementation of programs, placement, and services for individuals with specialized needs, including 504. The Director is responsible for the supervision and monitoring of all aspects of special education in the district.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for overall progress, monitoring, and accountability of the Special Education program. Supervises special education staff and acts as liaison with partner districts.
- Administers and monitors compliance with laws and regulations applicable to special education.
- Administers the special education and 504 program to ensure quality and cost effectiveness in compliance with local policy, state and federal laws and regulations.
- Advises Superintendent regarding special education.
- Assists in the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and assignment of special education personnel.
- Coordinates district special education services with local and state public and private organizations and agencies.
- Coordinates services with appropriate programs and agencies related to transportation, provision of mental health and medical services.
- Coordinates, conducts, and evaluates special education staff development, professional growth activities, and in-services.
- Develops and implements procedures and activities for gathering and reporting of special education data.
- Directly supervises school psychologists, school nurses, program specialists, speech pathologists, adaptive physical education specialists, and clerical support.
- Drives the implementation of district inclusion and supports the professional development of staff members.
- Ensures program accountability for all district special education students.
- Ensures the full educational opportunity for individuals with special needs through coordination with special education and regular education teachers, school psychologists, counselors, site level administrators, and site, district, and county level IEP teams.
- Ensures the procedural guidelines and legal protections for parents and students are implemented and followed.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and services on an on-going basis.
- Investigates concerns regarding the Special Education program.
- Manages the budgets for special education programs.
- Oversees workability program.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent, Instructional Services.
- Serves as liaison for partner districts, COE, and SELPA.
- Supervises the appropriate programs, placement, and support services needed for the operation of special education programs.
- Works in coordination with Director Student Services regarding 504 plans and student placement issues.
