The Position:
What Will You Do & How Will We Collaborate?

The Upper School Humanities Teacher will be an experienced, reflective educator with a strong foundation in secondary humanities instruction, including English and history, and a collaborative approach to teaching and learning. This intentionally interdisciplinary role includes teaching humanities courses across multiple Upper School grade levels and supporting the continued development of a coherent Humanities program.

The Humanities Teacher will design learning experiences that emphasize inquiry, critical reading, discussion, and historical thinking, supporting students in making meaning across texts, contexts, and perspectives. In addition to core coursework, the teacher will contribute to interdisciplinary programming, including short-term Immersive courses that connect humanities learning to place-based and community-based contexts. This role builds on a strong JK–11 Humanities foundation and offers a meaningful opportunity to help shape an evolving Upper School Humanities program grounded in curiosity, connection, and real-world relevance.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Actively participate in a collaborative employee culture that is committed to being at the leading edge of JK - 12th grade education.
  • Teach 4 sections (or the equivalent) of English and History courses
  • Advise 10-12 students, implementing the school’s social-emotional curriculum.
  • Provide a hands‑on, inquiry‑based style of teaching that exemplifies how student wellness, intellectual rigor, and a deep commitment to social impact and DEI are critical to a Hillbrook learning experience
  • Effectively manage flexible, collaborative learning experiences with various sized groups of students
  • Participate in the design of the new campus, classrooms and theater spaces
  • Thoughtfully integrate technology into the curriculum
  • Design and lead two, quarter‑long exploratory classes each year
  • Collaboratively design and teach two 3‑week Reach Beyond Immersives (transdisciplinary, project‑based courses using the city and the world as our classroom)
  • Co‑plan and co‑teach with colleagues focusing on differentiated instruction
  • Actively participate in a faculty culture that is committed to being at the leading edge of JK-12 education
  • Report to the Head of Upper School
