The School of Planning, Policy, and Environmental Studies at San José State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies starting August 2026. Candidates should bring an environmental justice lens to their work from diverse fields such as ecology, marine studies, environmental economics, and law. Teaching will encompass lower‑division and upper‑division core courses and the development of a new specialized course.
A record of teaching excellence, scholarship, and service is required for tenure and promotion.
- PhD in Environmental Studies or a related field by August 17, 2026
- Strong background in quantitative or qualitative research methods
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness in environmental studies
- Evidence of a productive research program in environmental studies
- Commitment to service within the School, College, and the university
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population
- Teach lower, upper, and graduate division Environmental Studies courses; develop new courses as applicable
- Advise majors and minors, supervise undergraduate and graduate research, and participate in departmental and college service; supervise at least two new graduate MS students each year
- Oversee a research program producing peer‑reviewed publications and seeking external funding
- Participate in shared governance through committees and other service assignments
- Organize classes within the Canvas LMS
- Demonstrate inclusive teaching practices for a diverse student population
All faculty are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and comply with CSU Executive Order 1083. Faculty may receive campus security authority duties and Clery Act training. Completion of required CSU employee training (Data Security, FERPA, etc.) is mandatory.
