Position Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at San José State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in the area of manufacturing and automation. The department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in contemporary manufacturing and automation areas, including but not limited to digital twins, flexible and hybrid electronics, next generation microelectronics packaging, additive manufacturing, sustainable materials, and AI integration in manufacturing.

Responsibilities include providing high quality education, developing curricula and laboratories, establishing an independent research program with externally funded projects and peer-reviewed publications, advising undergraduate and postgraduate students, and serving on committees to improve policies and resources. Faculty are expected to teach engineering courses, participate in shared governance, and organize classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant field by the time of appointment
  • Ability to teach and develop courses in manufacturing (additive/smart), design and/or robotics for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population
Preferred Qualifications
  • Track record of publication
  • Experience and/or interest in teaching and pedagogical methods
  • Experience with funding acquisition
  • Interest in establishing industrial partnerships in the Silicon Valley area
  • Project supervision experience with undergraduate or masters students
  • Interdisciplinary project experience in collaborative environments
Key Responsibilities
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering and related areas, prepare classes, assess learning outcomes, and pursue pedagogical improvements
  • Conduct research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, seek external funding, and supervise student research
  • Participate in shared governance and committee activities
  • Organize classes within the Canvas LMS
  • Demonstrate awareness of diverse student needs through inclusive course materials and advisement
