Job Summary
The Associate Dean for Faculty Success, Research & Industry Partnerships (AD‑FRIP) reports to the Dean and serves on the IDS leadership team. The AD‑FRIP is responsible for planning and advancing the College’s faculty success, research and creative activity (RSCA), and external engagement agendas. This includes faculty recruitment/retention/evaluation support; research development and compliance; facilitation of interdisciplinary, societally engaged research; and development of mutually beneficial partnerships with industry, community, and government that enhance faculty RSCA, experiential learning, and workforce pipelines.
The AD‑FRIP ensures alignment with university policies and collaborates closely with the Division of Research & Innovation, University Personnel/Faculty Affairs, and the SJSU Research Foundation.
- Lead and oversee initiatives that enhance faculty success, development, and evaluation processes within the College
- Coordinate faculty recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, retention, and review processes (RTP and post‑tenure support) in alignment with university policy
- Develop and implement faculty development programs, briefings, and training related to RSCA, faculty affairs, curriculum governance, and compliance
- Plan, direct, and implement strategies for RSCA advancement, including tracking research output, managing internal funding programs, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration
- Serve as IDS liaison to the Division of Research & Innovation and the SJSU Research Foundation for pre/post‑award activities, compliance, and limited submissions
- Build and maintain partnerships with industry, nonprofit, and public agencies to advance faculty RSCA, sponsored research, experiential learning, and workforce development
- Convene and lead an External/Industry Advisory Council aligned with College priorities
- Promote and support research infrastructure, including space planning, safety coordination, and shared research resources
- Represent IDS in university‑wide councils and committees related to RSCA and faculty success
- Participate in strategic planning, budget development, policy formation, and college operations as part of the IDS leadership team
- Supervise assigned staff and promote a culture of inclusion, transparency, and continuous improvement
- Demonstrated success in advancing RSCA programs and securing external funding from public and private sources
- Knowledge of research development, federal/state/private sponsors, and compliance (IRB, data governance, research security)
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff, students, and partners
- Proven capacity to build and sustain collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
- Expertise in academic personnel processes, including RTP, lecturer evaluation, and faculty mentoring
- Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
- Ability to lead and manage change, handle confidential matters with discretion, and foster an inclusive academic climate
- Familiarity with research facilities, computing environments, laboratory operations, and safety practices
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all areas of responsibility
- Doctorate or terminal degree in a field relevant to IDS (e.g., information/data science, informatics, computer science/engineering, statistics, or related)
- Record of scholarship/creative work commensurate with appointment at the rank of tenured full professor in IDS
- Demonstrated experience of academic leadership (e.g., chair/associate chair, center director, ADR/associate dean, PI of multi‑investigator grants)
- Track record of funded grants, contracts, or foundation awards, with particular success in securing external funding from agencies, from competitive public and private entities
