Job Summary

Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. Physicians for the SWC contribute to the design, delivery, and quality enhancement of primary and specialty healthcare and wellness support to achieve this vision campus-wide. The Student Wellness Center provides limited psychiatric services for students which may include diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic psychiatric illness.

The Psychiatrist is expected to obtain a detailed intake assessment, as well as to order any appropriate laboratory tests to support diagnostic evaluations. The Psychiatrist may, when appropriate, refer students to other practitioners within the SJSU Wellness Center or refer to community resources for more extensive follow-up and treatment. Receiving operational direction from the Lead Physician and reporting to the Health Services Director, the Student Wellness Center Psychiatrist works independently in performing assigned student services and consultations with SWC medical staff and counseling staff.

Consultation could involve advice regarding psychiatric diagnostic treatment and psychotherapeutic activities and are in accordance with the overall operation of the SWC and within the scope of the program established by the Board of Trustees. All staff are expected to conform to CSU, State, and Federal regulations and laws. Although unlikely, there may be an occasion of brief evening or weekend work.

Working collegially and collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SWC positions.
