Job Summary

San José State University is seeking a Primary Care Physician to join its Student Wellness Center (SWC), a comprehensive, integrated health center dedicated to supporting student health, well-being, and academic success. The Primary Care Physician works independently to provide high-quality outpatient medical care to a diverse student population, reporting to the Director of Health Services with operational direction from the Lead Physician.

This position delivers a full range of primary medical services, including preventive care, diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, sexual and reproductive health services, and health education. The incumbent collaborates with interdisciplinary clinical teams to ensure coordinated, student-centered care in alignment with university and CSU policies.

• Provide comprehensive outpatient primary medical care, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for student patients
• Perform physical exams and office-based procedures; order and interpret diagnostic tests
• Provide sexual and reproductive health services, including education, counseling, and medication abortion care
• Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary clinical teams and refer patients to outside providers as appropriate
• Participate in meetings, accreditation activities, and quality improvement initiatives

• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse, multicultural population in a university community
• Thorough understanding of general medicine, public health principles, and diagnostic clinical decision-making, with the ability to provide treatment and medical counseling
• Demonstrated ability to efficiently prioritize patients’ problems based on urgency and demonstrated critical thinking to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
• Ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care tasks, along with capacity to quickly assess emergency situations and take prompt action
• Working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations, as well as the ethics and standards of practicing medicine, enabling compliance with policies and procedures
• Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU and SJSU policies and procedures
• Ability to prepare comprehensive case histories and handle multiple work priorities effectively
• Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling, enabling effective correspondence and report formatting
• Technical skills to work with medical records and scheduling software; acuity in learning new software as applicable to position responsibilities
• Excellent customer service and public relations skills, facilitating effective communication across a variety of venues
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications

• Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned primary duties.

• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California
• Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties
• A valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances
• Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties

• At least one (1) year of clinical experience in a college health setting or similar environments
• At least one (1) year of demonstrated proficiency in suturing and/or performing minor surgeries (without anesthesia)
• At least one (1) year of clinical experience including mental health/behavioral care competence
