Job Title

Temporary Accountant with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region.

Location

San Jose, CA (Onsite)

Assignment Details

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year

Work Schedule: Full Time - Hours per Week: 40

Role Overview

The role performs professional-level accounting work supporting centralized accounting functions, including processing transactions, performing reconciliations, preparing journal entries, supporting revenue collections, and providing customer service for internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities span general ledger, accounts receivable, cash receipts, and financial reporting activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process credit card transactions and verify accuracy and proper accounts.
  • Process daily receipts, deposit checks, and upload documentation to accounting folders.
  • Prepare journal entries for reclasses, property taxes, cash receipts, and other revenues.
  • Process general invoices related to leased properties and other department-submitted requests.
  • Process employee expense reimbursements (travel, mileage, licenses, credit card transactions) per policy.
  • Participate in preparation of financial summaries, schedules, audit work papers, and footnote disclosures. Reconcile bank accounts, asset/liability accounts, payroll data, and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Review and approve purchase orders and contracts for compliance with policy and budget availability.
  • Audit invoices processed by support staff; code expenses and compute reimbursements.
  • Respond to customer inquiries (internal and external)
  • Provide technical assistance and training to co‑workers, temporary staff, and interns.
  • Gain understanding of District revenue collection processes.
  • Learn the review and approval flow for employee expense claims.
Required Experience
  • Experience in General Ledger and Accounts Receivable.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems.
  • 1 year of professional accounting experience; OR equivalent combination via substitution.
Preferred Experience
  • Governmental accounting exposure (GASB principles).
  • Experience preparing financial audit schedules, year‑end close support, or financial analyses.
  • Background processing daily receipts and revenue recognition activities (from temporary assignment)
Required Skills Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of basic accounting principles; governmental accounting is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience with integrated financial accounting systems / ERP systems (e.g., People Soft or similar).
  • Ability to use desktop applications for financial reporting and record‑keeping.
Soft Skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines.
  • Team‑oriented, flexible, and open to varied assignments.
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Clear and concise communication (written and verbal).
  • Ability to provide excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Ability to learn and apply accounting rules, audit procedures, and financial analysis (Accountant I level).
Education / Certifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field. Equivalent experience substitution allowed (1.5 years experience = 1 year education, up to 4 years). A valid California Driver's License may be required if driving is an essential job function.
