Position: Senior Staff Accountant for Large Collaborative Nonprofit

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit with decades of service, empowers youth and families through housing, education, counseling, and advocacy, guided by a vision to end family homelessness. Our client seeks a Senior Staff Accountant to support critical finance functions, including month-end close, audits, payroll, and reconciliations. The role demands technical proficiency, organizational skill, and the ability to build trusted relationships across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Perform month-end and quarter-end close tasks and support account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules
  • Maintain accounting records in compliance with US GAAP for nonprofits, including fund accounting standards, and ensure strong internal controls
  • Assist with Sage Intacct administration, system enhancements, and workflow improvements
  • Reconcile grant revenue, contribution receivables, and other funding sources; track and report unrestricted and restricted contributions with the Development team
  • Support accounts receivable, deferred revenue, and grant funding activities, including cash receipt monitoring
  • Review payroll and PTO accruals, audit payroll uploads, and process payroll in the absence of the Payroll Specialist; maintain personnel allocation master file
  • Assist with annual audits, grant monitoring, 5500 audits, workers’ compensation audits, and Form 990 preparation.
  • Prepare documentation, reconciliations, and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awardsto ensure accurate federal award reporting and grant compliance
  • Ensure compliance with government and foundation reporting requirements and provide financial data for internal reporting and program management decisions
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, with 7+ years of progressive GL accounting experience; nonprofit experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP for nonprofits, fund accounting, grant compliance, and federal awards reporting
  • Experience with government contracts, compliance reporting, and ERP systems (Sage Intacct preferred)
  • Payroll experience, including exempt and non-exempt staff
  • Advanced Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, VLOOKUP) and high attention to detail for managing complex financial data
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills; able to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and adapt to changing priorities
