Position SummaryProvides swim lesson instruction to a diverse population using national YMCA principles and program models. Instructors are asked to demonstrate the YMCA Mission and Guidelines. Fundamental knowledge in aquatics is critical to the success of this position. National YMCA Swim Program training certificates are required within 90 days or upon first available training.

- You must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
- All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work.
- Staff working on SFUSD campuses may be required to complete additional COVID safety trainings.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement.
- Create a welcoming environment by greeting members and learning their names.
- Follow stated guidelines for Swim program in accordance with national YMCA policies as well as in-house practices, helping program participants build confidence in order to develop swim skills.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times.
- Greet participants, take attendance, and record their progression at the end of the session.
- Complete all paperwork in an accurate, timely manner. This includes timecards, incident reports, progress reports and any other duties assigned by supervisor(s).
- Must arrive on deck and be ready to teach by scheduled time. All necessary equipment should be out and assembled before class begins and instructors must clean their equipment after class concludes. Be aware of on deck safety and equipment use and procedures. Report missing or damaged equipment to supervisor.
- Ensure the safety of all students during class time.
- Teach from in the water unless cleared by the supervisor on deck.
- Know and follow all emergency procedures. Give directions and be responsible for students in the event of an emergency. Completed incident reports as needed.
- Commit to work 80% of the group lesson session and make prior arrangements with a qualified substitute for planned absences and seek approval from supervisor(s).
- Must be available during Safety Around Water week, which is held during the local school districts spring break (late March or April).
- Maintain all required certifications, and notify supervisor(s) when expiration dates are approaching.
- Complete all mandatory ADP LMS safety training and Y-USA e-Learning before the first shift in the facility.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
- Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
