Job Description

Under general supervision, cuts, forms, fabricates and installs various gauge sheet metal fixtures, systems, reinforcements and structures, and repairs and/or replaces damaged sheet metal fittings or structures. Perform related duties as required.

Essential Functions
  • Determine work from orders or blueprints, type, cut, and material needed; obtain metal from stock or requisition; measure and mark for cutting and forming.
  • Cut sheet metal parts using hand or power tools; bend, form, and fasten pieces with joining equipment.
  • Erect scaffolds for high‑location work.
  • Lift and set sheet metal parts or objects in place and connect with other units.
  • Use solder to join sheet metal parts and products.
  • Use arc, acetylene, or spot welding equipment to join metal parts.
  • Fabricate and install HVAC systems and all related sheet metal components.
  • Fabricate and install architectural sheet metal parts such as skylights, gutters, downspouts, and louvers.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Nature of Work

Requires physical effort and dexterity; exposure to working conditions where moderately serious injuries may occur.

Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of a recognized sheet metal worker’s apprenticeship program (Building Trades).
  • Experience: Three (3) years of journeyman‑level sheet metal working experience.
  • License and Certification: Valid California driver license. (Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the apprenticeship program on a year‑for‑year basis.)
Notes on Qualifying Experience and Education
  • One year full‑time employment equals 2,000 hours (40‑hour work week). Overtime above 40 hours is not included.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

Selection Procedures
  • Written Examination (40%): Assess knowledge, skills, and abilities related to sheet metal trade and safety.
  • Oral Performance Examination (60%): Test relative knowledge, skill, and ability in job‑related areas, including fabrication, repair, installation, and use of tools.
  • Applicants who pass both exams are ranked on the Eligible List in score order.
  • Candidate scores may also apply to other announcements directed by the Human Resources Director.
